I am thinking of getting a protien shake, I have seen some in of all places the argos catalogue, but I wanna know do they work?

Also a friend of mine suggested the following shake, milk, egg whites and banana mixed up in a blender, would this one work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do they work? Not sure what you mean but you do need a whey shake for PWO its very important.
All shakes are for is to SUPPLEMENT you diet?! Most people say 1 to 1.5 grams of protien per lean body mass and if you are 230+ this can get difficult with whole foods.BUt a shake alone isnt gonna do wonders it will only help you along with a good diet plan.
But yeah is is a god idea to get some whey for your PWO besides that if you can get all your protien in then you dont really need any other time.

Protein shake = protein, what do you mean do they work? Do they work for what? Its protein, if you need protein then have one, make sure that the meal is balanced though and/or the shake is an MRP. If its nothing but protein you are going to waste some of it for glucose conversion.

Milk/egg/banana = weight gainer for me, in a negative way.

1 egg a day is ok, otherwise it may put you at risk due to cholesterol levels.

Sure they work but only in conjuction with your diet and training. Just taking in a protein shake everyday is not going to make a difference in the way you look. A protein shake would be "supplemental" to food. I use them because they are convienient. You need a certain amount of protein per day, you can get it all from food or a combination of food and shakes.

When I say do they work, I mean for muscle gains.

You need to have a certain amount of protein in your diet, if your not getting it versus getting it, then yes they would "work" in terms of helping you to reach your scheduled protein intake whatever that happens to be.

protien isn't a drug designed to get you big bro, protien is the building block of muscle, you need protien to help your muscles replenish after tearing your muscle fibers during workouts.

John Defendis, former MR. USA, (Mudge's "motivational" icon), actually told me protien shakes are useless and a waste of money. He said they are a scam by supp. companies making everyone believe that shakes are the best way to get protien.

Don't get me wrong, i def. use them myself. i eat like 3 or 4 of them a day, to make sure i'm getting enough protien. He said its a waste of my money and i should spend the money on quality foods like chix, steak, ground beef etc. instead.

Personally, i dont know what to believe. But it made me wonder when he also said that he has trained over 300 champion BB's and not one of them eats any protein shakes....

well John Defendis is an animal and I have the UTMOST respect for him, and he is semi-right about solid foods being a better choice for your protien intake than a supp. Howver I think that protien is protien and a mix of whey powder and solid food is your best route. Sometimes we don't have time to make a food every time we need protien, and it is much harder to get a high amount without supplementing for sure, go ahead and try to eat 400 grms of protien with no powder in one day, it is almost impossible.
we must remember that things that top BB do will not necessarily work for us, with hte genetics on these guys they could do alot less and see alot more, ya feel me. From a nutrition science standpoint protien powders are great, not a scam.

PS. Flex you actually met John?? I am Jealous!

I totally agree with you Gr, i think they are a great way to get that extra protien you need. they are very convienent and a non expensive way to increase protein intake.....

I wish i met him, but i actually emailed him and he emailed me back....... not cocky, arrogant or anything you may expect from a highly accomplished BB. Extremely nice and down to earth guy (i mean that's with what i come up with from meeting him over emails...), that's the best way to sum it up. He almost seemed to enjoy helping me out....

have you ever read his intensity or insanity articles? talk about a bad Mo Fo, they are so inspiring to read though. I try to emulate the same instensity in my training, of coourse I have a ways to go to get there, ha

Protein from shakes is the same thing as protein from food. Just more easy to take.

Ya boys,
those articles are insane period....that Steve guy (and of course John would be just as good) is the kinda partner i need, what an animal. Those are the kinda bad asses i love seeing represent the sport....

People, especially old schoolers are sometimes going to be biased against anything new. We all know computers are the devil and going to make us all pornoholics and mass murderers.

Eating all your protein is not impossible but it can be expensive :(

I feel you on that bro

And thuganomics that is the most newbie question I've ever read!.... if you don't know what protein is I dunno why you're bothering

You need protein to build muscle, most of us can't eat enough protein from food sources alone so we supplement our protein intake with protein supplements

If your serious about getting big then you need a good protein supplement (unless you have a full-time big budgeted personal chef cooking you meals 7 times a day, which I doubt very much)

Get your knowledge right and read some books dawg, 4 real!

We were all newbies once bro, if he doesn't bother than how will he learn. its all good fellas. Besides I have definately seen more newbie ?? than that, ha ha. good times.
hey young D who is that in your AVI?? I am curious

only shakes i take in is 50 grams whey psot workout with my 1 cup oatmeal and 6 oz yam. i may mix 25 grams with my oatmeal in the moring with solid food , and may be preworkout with solid food. but it would be in a shake just in with oatbran or oatmeal.

contest time 8 weeks out it ALL goes and I get 430 grams of protein a day from all solid food ! ? Don;t care how clean shakes are they are still man made. can never repalce mother nature !

Multiple protein shakes have been tested and had results published on the net, they are not "fake."

I'm asking this again, when you make protein pancakes ( you heat the protein with oats and eggwhites) when the whey protein is heated are you going to lose the nutri in the whey protein?

Good one Prince. Do they do the ion exchanging too?
:D

hmm.. yes.

There is no definitive answer to your question:

All they are meant to do is supplement your diet with extra protein, bar none.

If it is an MRP, it is a MEAL REPLACEMENT at FACE VALUE:

Thats all, with a balanced nutritional program they can add both taste and convenience in getting all your meals in.,

i think you can eat 400 grams of protein in a day easily... BUT... my ass would be SOOOO damn broke... and my pantry would have to be FULL of cans of tuna and my freezer would be FULL of chicken breasts... also, women might be turned off by the can of tuna in my pocket...

the colestorals are in the yolk so if you are having whites only you are at a low risk of getting high colestorals from it, plus you are not recomended to have more than 3 full eggs a week :thumb:

Proteins are the building blocks of muscles...

I eat meat everyday, and drink a protein Shake post workout!

I drank a protein shake today and gained 2 inches on my bicep..
 Sorry, couldn't resist that one :hehe:

Just thought I would dig this post up. Its from about 2 years ago to the day... haha, "Do protein shakes ACTUALLY work?" hahahaha
