I've always felt past relationships should be left out of current relationships, but these sorts of questions always seem to surface some time.
I hate it. This is actually a current problem for me (past relationships affecting current relationship).

I really don't care much about a woman's sex life before we formed a relationship. I would be happy if they were faithful to me, and the past doesn't matter.
But now that I think about it, I haven't trusted a girl since I was 15. Looks like I am doomed to one-night stands for a while.

I think if you are worried, get a doctor to clear her.
Finding out about past sexual history doesn't do anything good for the relationship. A doctor is a more reliable way of finding out is she (or you) have anything. A girl that only had it once might have AIDS while some whore could be totally clean.

To answer your original question, no I don't ask. I ask that we never talk about exes, but like I said, something always seems to come up.

I don't think when you 1st date somebody...you have the right to ask the number or Who it was. That sort of conversation is only going to cause trouble, fighting and jealousy.
However, like someone already said...these things tend to come up. Somewhere in the middle seems okay for me. Bring things up when it seems RELEVANT or needed...when in can contribute in some way to the relationship or explain something.
It all depends on the MOTIVATION behind the discussion...

For a woman it would be something like "How do you find my G-spot so perfectly?" and for a man it would be "So how did you learn to not gag like that?". Then when the answer comes ... you have to be able to deal with your own ego. Else wise don't ask.

I'd be more concerned with how promiscuous she was, if she cheated on past partners and stuff like that. If she's gotten gang banged by a hockey team (like a friends ex revealed to him after they got engaged) then she's out the door. Likewise if she's a serial cheater.

You can usually tell by how experienced they are our just get them drunk and then ask....
That is the problem, I know a couple and the guy is totally happy with her but he has no idea that she is a slut. I know the word is harsh but she is a slut. I dont have anything against sluts but she acts like she is not one and she lies so well about it.
