Dumbing Down Our Kids

Charles Sykes is the author of DUMBING DOWN OUR KIDS. The following is a list he created for high school and college graduates of things he did not learn in school. In his book, he talks about how the "system" may have created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair; get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will not make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you "earn" both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger-flipping; they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you screw up, it's not your parents' fault so don't whine about your mistakes. Learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning your room, and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. So before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades, they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off, and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is not real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Live in the now grandpa :flipoff: :p

...because of the slow posting today...I've been forced to go visit threads from YEARS ago...posted by some that may of the newer IM's had notthe pleasure of meeting...

Anyway...I like these...

Anyone but him :( He was an asshole wife beater! I'm so glad Leah dumped his ass!

Its still a good thread. I agree a 100% that our country has dumbed down everything for kids.

Yeah Rob had some good posts that's for sure, but after all these years, I still get the creeps when I see his name pop up. :shake:

yeah...well, there is THAT...it's been so long, I'd forgotten..

She is doing pretty good. She's really got her life back in order and is doing well. I will tell her you said hi. :)

sweet!
I do miss her. Think she'd ever come back here?
I never did get too used to her site...Dero still there?

my friends are headed to Phoenix tongiht...was supposed to go and check it out while its hot to see if I do want to move there next spring...but w/ my car just costing me 1500.00 in repairs last week...funds got a little tight...thinking I ma still gonna try it in October...be up for a cup of coffee? :)

That wasn't Leah's site that you are thinking of. Different peeps.

She won't ever return here. I tried several times to get her here but it's a no go. :( She has her own site that I just can't seem to get involved with. Leah and NG are there but it's like a ton of women on that board all complaining about their weight all the time, cheating on their diets and then wondering why they can't lose weight. Drives me insane  I pop in there though to say hi on the occasion.

Sure, just let me know when you are coming out. It's actually not that hot these days because of monsoon season. We are staying around 90's-100's right now.

And there in lies the problem.

It's no wonder that children snap and that we have so many dysfunctional adults. Since the '60s, we've been increasingly treating our children like they are morons. Back in the 50s, a .22 rifle was considered a good toy for an 8 year old child. A child's chemistry set came with acids strong enough to etch metal. And what about these days? A sling shot is considered a firearm and if a toy doesn't have all rounded edges, it isn't safe.

We treat them like they can't take care of themselves, so, as a self-fulfilling prophesy, they can't. They feel helpless and scared.

Now, add to that the lack of active parenting and what do you get?

I was reading somewhere that someguy was retrospecting the same thing. He said that when he was 12 years old, his parent's pinned his uncle's address on a piece of paper to his shirt, put him on a ship from Itlay to America (never to see his parents again) and snet him on his way.
He siad: try that w/ a 12 year old today...

jeez..you can't even put a kid on an airplane non-stop at that age nowadays..

heh...we were just allowed to stop wearing shirts and ties to work. (can wear a collared shirt unless we are briefing our Colonel....but dam..ties retain HEAT! I can deal w/ 90's....

I also don't buy into that 'no child left behind' crap rule either. If the kid doesn't or can't do the work to pass the grade...to let them go forward is a disservice to them...

life isnt fair...as stated above. if somebody pushes you into a pool..you have two choices...sink or swim...there's not always gonna be a life guard to save you...what are YOU going to do?

In the Real World 80% of jobs require no thinking what-so-ever so it's not that tough.
