The sports network slapped broadcaster Bob Griese with a one-week suspension Tuesday over a crude remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
The former Miami Dolphins quarterback remarked during a college football game Saturday that Montoya, who is Colombian, was "out having a taco."
ESPN suspended Griese from working this week's game.
"We've spoken to him and he understands why his comment was inappropriate," said ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz.
The racially insensitive remark came when a graphic listing the five leading drivers in NASCAR's points race popped up
during a Minnesota-Ohio State football game.
Fellow analyst Chris Spielman wondered where Montoya was, prompting Griese's answer.
The Hall of Famer, who led the Dolphins to two straight Super Bowl victories, apologized twice on the air.
Montoya declined to comment on the suspension. He said Sunday he'd never heard of Griese.
ESPN has been busy penalizing staffers in recent days.
It fired baseball analyst Steve Phillips Sunday over his affair with a young underling and on Monday, canned his former mistress, production assistant Brooke Hundley.
