Splash Page EXCLUSIVE: Kenneth Branagh Breaks Silence On â?????Thor,â?????? Says Casting Talk Is Premature

Published by Josh Horowitz on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 5:16 pm.
Itâ??????s been over two months since word broke that Marvel was courting Kenneth Branagh to direct their next big-screen re-launch of one of their cherished heroes, Thor. And since then weâ??????ve heard nary a peep from Branagh himself. At todayâ??????s junket for â?????Valkyrie,â??? MTV News caught up with the actor/filmmaker and of course brought up the project.

â?????I am directing â?????Thorâ??? or â?????The Mighty Thorâ?????? as you might like to call it,â??? he said with a smile before clarifying what the title of the film will be. â?????I think it will be â?????Thorâ??????.â???

MTV has spoken to other writers about why Branagh would be such a good fit for the hero. But here was finally an opportunity to hear from Branagh about what appealed to him about the project. So whatâ??????s the appeal of â?????Thor,â??? Kenneth? â?????To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures,â??? he enthused.

He continued excitedly, â?????Thereâ??????s science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. Itâ??????s based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way.

So who will play Branaghâ??????s hero? Asked about the rumors of Kevin McKidd being up for the role, the director waved it off as premature speculation.

â?????Thereâ??????s been lots of talk [about casting] â?????? I sound like a politician â?????? but we are too early at this stage. Weâ??????re getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting. Someone sensational is going to play the part but it is early days.â???

Just because Branagh hasnâ??????t worked on a project of this scale since â?????Mary Shelleyâ??????s Frankenstein,â??? fear not. This â?????Thorâ??? promises to be as large as the character would seem to call out for. â?????Itâ??????s a chance to tell a big story on a big scale,â??? said Branagh. â?????Itâ??????s a human story right in the center of a big epic scenario.â???

Branaghâ??????s keeping mum for the most part but are you liking what he has to say so far? Is he the best director for â?????Thorâ????

you fucking nerds!

Am I the only one sick of the lack of originality in Hollywood? It seems like the only types of movies coming out now are sequels, remakes of older movies, or superhero movies. Look what is in theaters right now: A-Team, Iron Man 2, Sex and the City 2, Shrek 3, Toy Story 3, Karate Kid. There will even be a remake of Spiderman!

I will not be seeing any of this crap. Hollywood needs to understand that the point is quality, not quantity. (Yeah yeah, they have bottom lines to meet... but they're dumbing down American pop culture. Remember when movies like Forest Gump came out? Those were the days...)
