Cols,OH. It sucks.
OK... loaded up on Fish oil AND Flaxseed oil (buy1get1 @ walgreens), but I have no idea how much I'm supposed to be taking. I've seen it taken a a few times a day, 2-4caps each time, in various meal-plans, but I've never heard anything more scientific about it.

Any thoughts?

Oh! Also, I heard that fish oil should be kept in the freezer to make it easier on your stomach. Anyone else heard anything like that?

If its liquid oil its going to get hard in the freezer

I like taking 2-4tbsp per day of flax oil. Depends on how much olive oils I am using in my cooking that day.

Olive oil = Omega 6, right? So you're just balancing the two?

Also, no fish oil for you?

I limit flax oil when I suplement it only depending on how much olive oil I have used in that days cooking. I have no scientific reason to switch between the two other then limiting how many calories come from fat. I just ensure the fat I am getting is good.

As for not supplementing fish oil I don't think I need to. I eat fish twice a day so I assume I am good on fish oils.

You put the fish oil (if it is a pill) in the freezer to lessen the fish burps.

I prefer fish oil over flaxseed oil.

Fish oil = EPA/DHA

Flaxseed oil = ALA which is converted to EPA/DHA

Personally I am for 6-9 grams of fish oil a day.

If monitoring fats the ideal range of n6:n3 would be around 4:1

6-9 grams is nothing....IMO 6-9 grams of any fat isn't going to make a whole hills of beans difference. In saturated fat what is that like 4 fries? That is not an issue. With that said I can't see how so little healthy fats could be a benefit.

1 tbsp of Barleans flax oil is 11g fat...most people take that twice a day....so that 22g of healthy fats.

Ya, my wife does it for just that reason and it does seem to help. Personally I don't have a problem with fish burps so I just take them out of the bottle. I take 4/day for a total of 4g. I also tke 2 tblsp of Udo's, which gives me an additional 29g of good fats.
I'm not sure if it's true or not but remember that coal mining disaster a little while ago where only one guy survived? Supposedly he was really out of it when they finally got to him and the doctor used a radical therapy of massive quantitys of fish oil as part of his treatment. Have you guys heard anything about this?

Yeah, I remember reading about that. It was an ungodly amount though.

Difference in what?? saturated fat and omega 3 & 6 cannot be compared together. Whole different ballgame. Have you read Jodi's stickies on Omega fats?

I am not comparing saturated fats to omega 3 and 6...I am saying 6-9 grams of any fat isn't that significant....its not even a significant amount of calories from fat. So the whole 6g of french fries ain't no big thing...I feel that 6g of omega 3 and 6 ain't shit either. Barleans Flax is 110 calories and 10g of omega 3,6,9....I would have at least 2 servings of that a day...and another minimum of 2 servings of olive oil.......so 6g of any fat in my mind is not enough to benefit or hurt you.

remember you will be getting more fats including n3's from other sources of your diet. All I am referencing is just the supplement of fish oil.

I take about 2-3 tablespoons per day (I don't usually measure).

I only use Carlson's liquid fish oil, it's great. NO fishy taste whatsoever.

1fl oz = 2tblsp
16.9fl oz bottle Carlson's liquid fish oil = $24 (approx)

2-3 tblsp day = 60-90 tblsp month = 30-45fl oz month = 2-3 bottles = $50-75/mo in just fish oil. Are you serious!?

ok, so maybe I was a little off on my estimation lol  There are some days I forget and some days I take less so I guess on average it's definitely not 3 tblsp/day, i'm too broke for that haha But like I said, I usually don't measure, I just pour it into my mouth (without lipping the bottle that is). I just wanted to make the point that I take a lot, more than just a few capsules a day.

I think it helps with my joints and well-being. It could've been a coincidence but when I ran out of fish oil recently, my knee that I had gotten surgery on almost a year prior started giving me a lot of pain. I sure hope my Vitamin Shoppe order gets here soon!

Sorry for the confusion...

Carlson is a top notch product. You get what you pay for especially with fish oil

Let me weigh in on the issue... Omega-3's, omega-6's, the body cannot get enough of this stuff. I don't think it's an understatement to say that every single human on planet earth unless they live in a costa rican fishing village or live on a sesame farm in thailand are deficient in EFA's (essential fatty acids). Of all the different groups of nutrients the body needs, Fats are by far the most complex in function. Therefore, it's not a matter of quantity over quality or visa versa. The body needs fatty acids (omegas) not just from fish, or just from vegetables, or from seeds and grains but from all of those, and the body doesn't worry about quantity as long as you are giving it a variety. The worst that can happen if you take TOO MUCH fish oil or flax seed oil is that your doodoo will get greasy because the body will take what it needs and poop out the rest.

Oh, and the guy who said he eats fish twice a day, I would be eat less fish and take more oils, because nowadays storebought fish is filthy and full of toxins. Still, essential, but in moderation. Fish twice a day is too much.

Edit: To be more specific about types of oils, there are 3 groups of EFA's: Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9's.

alpha linolenic acid (omega 3)
linoleic acid (omega 6)
oleic acid (omega 9)

and the ratio for these in that order should be about... 1:15:20

You need the EPA and DHA found in fish oil as well as ALA. The dosage is dependant on the concentration of EPA/DHA, but one should consume 5-12 grams a day. It's not so much the oil that is beneficial, but the EPA/DHA content. Both have been proven to reduce blood pressure, lower blood lipids, and inflammation caused by diets high in Omega6's. The ideal ratio of 6 to 3 should be 1:1 or 1:2, but because we are used to prepackaged and fast food, our diet is more like 20:1 in favor of omega6's. This creates an environment for inflammatory woes, such as high blood pressure, asthma, general aches and pains, and depressed moods. Most people diets don't contain enough cold water fish to adequately give them the needed amounts of these important omega3's, so it is very beneficial to supplement with a highly concentrated, purified fish oil, especially for weight lifters, as higher doses of DHA in men is found to increase testosterone levels. It's just a win-win.:thumb:

Right. This is my understanding exactly. The 1:1 or 1:2 ratio has been mentioned in several books I've read. The body is apparently not too able to use Omega 6 oils in the absence of Omega 3s. Hence adding walnuts(3s) to a shake that has peanut butter(6s) in it is a good idea, as well as having a couple/few Fish Oil caps(3s) if you're snacking on half an ounce of almonds(6s).
