im just curious

Flaxseed oil and fish oil

why do some people prefer one over the other?
what are the benifets and disadvantages to each?
which do you use?
what kind personal effects have you noticed with flaxseed/fish oil?

Bump. Good question, I used flax because I don't like the fish burp. I just ordered some Essence from IML though.

Flaxseed oil and fish oil

why do some people prefer one over the other? Flavour, fish oil burps
what are the benifets and disadvantages to each?I have some read some concerns with Flaxseed oil and alpha lineolic acid. Can't find anything right now
which do you use? Fish, will be switching brands here shortly. Probably Carlsons, from the Price Club brand.
what kind personal effects have you noticed with flaxseed/fish oil? To be honest nothing really. But I can't neglect the lack of n3's in our diet.

Fish Oil is a lot better.

However, some studies suggest that these plant sources may be less effective than oily fish. The most effective component of Omega-3 fatty acids is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and to a lesser extent eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The fatty acids in flaxseed oil and other plant oils contain only the precursor to DHA and EPA, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), but they do not contain DHA and EPA themselves, so the body must convert the ALA into DHA and EPA. A healthy person's body converts only 19% of the ALA, and this figure falls when a person is elderly, unfit or ill. Since plant sources already contain smaller quantities of fatty acids than oily fish, this means that a much greater amount of the plant sources must be consumed in order to equal the effects of a smaller amount of oily fish.

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2003 examined lactating women who received supplements of 15g of flax seed oil per day. It showed a significant increase of ALA in their blood and milk, in addition to EPA, but no increase in DHA[1]. DHA is converted from ALA in the body and is required for the structure of cell membranes, in particular in the brain and the retina of the eye.

Recently Omega-3 has been extracted from algae that is claimed by those who extract it to contain both EPA and DHA [2].

You know, I'm sort of a nerd when it comes to wiki, I'll read that site for hours sometimes just going from one def to another via the embedded links. I'm surprised I never took the time to see what it had to say about fish oil or flax oil.

I'm sort of glad I'm going to Essence.

I think Essence is great and I personally recommend it but I don't feel there is enough EPA/DHA and that you also need to supplement with Fish Oils as well. Carlson or Natural Factors RX Liquid fish oil is where it's at.

i just bought some "PFO Pure Fish Oil" by Health from the sea and they put some kind of orange juice flavor in it and when ever i burp i always get the taste like i just ate an orange. I recommend it.

EPA 180mg (1 soft gel)
DHA 120mg (1 soft gel)

I just bought some Pure Omega 3. It says it has a better taste profile, whatever that means!

I have read that fish oil is better. I have the worst upper digestive problems anyway, so fish burps don't bother me.

Fish Oil just because of the rumors about Flax. Don't even really care to research that rumor since fish oil is just as cheap and gets the job done ;)

If it's PURE fish oil then where does the orange flavor come from? Am I the only one that notices when companies do stupid crap like this?

I got my Essence and based on Jodi's advice I'm taking 4 of them per day as well as 3 fish caps per day. I must say I feel a lot better knowing what I know now, and knowing that I made a change for the best.

Carlson's does a flavoured Fish oil as well. I couldn't imagine downing a spoonful of straight fish oil.

Fish oil...not sure I believe the flax oil risks but why risk it when fish oil is available.

I freeze them to cut down on fish burps.

I prefer fish oil (pharmaceutical grade) heavy metal tested.

But I do like ground flax seed mixed into things.
