Not terribly slow, really. Depends on what day it is.

What's the trade off? (if there is any)

Thinking of making the jump to 4.0? I've noticed a lot of boards are lately.

Depends on how much porn I'm downloading, but that isn't really your fault.

Most of the time fine, sometimes unreachable but pretty rare these days. I notice it lags when editing a post, unless I go to GO ADVANCED. Otherwise it just sits there, it does this in IE, Firefox and Chrome - strange.

I just took this pole and now everything on here is taking FOREVER to load.

Muscle Gelz Transdermals
IronMag Labs Prohormones
the ads seem to make it hang a bit before it loads at the very first but it is not more than a few seconds. nothing to complain about at all.

I'm seeing the same thing as Mudge..only lags when I edit.
Though LW has a good point too.. .maybe it's that world pharma sponsor!

:roflmao:

Oh no...
I'm banned, aren't I.
:gosh:

for tech geeks, here is the new server on order:

Dual Xeon 5520
12 GB RAM
2x Intel Xeon 5520 2.26 GHz Quad Core Processors
Second Intel Xeon 5520 2.26 GHz Quad Core Processor
RAID 1 - x6 Drive Capacity
300 GB 15K RPM SCSI/SAS HDD
300 GB 15K RPM SCSI/SAS HDD
146 GB 10K RPM SCSI/SAS HDD (back-up drive)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5.x - 64 bit

I noticed the Nav bar on the side hangs for about 10 seconds at times right in the center then it shifts left and the rest starts stacking up in it's place...

Do you manage your own server?

The new server is ready, all websites have been moved except this forum, I always move the forums last because the database is huge and it takes a long time. I plan to move the forums sometime this week, have not decided when yet.

I assume the forum will be inaccessable during the move.
How long will it take do you think?
Good luck! Make sure your backups are recent and redundant! ;)

not sure, it's been about 4-5 years since I migrated to a new server, but I would guess a few hours.
of course, the db's are backed up every night, and all sites get backed up to a separate harddrive every night.
the same thing will be true on the new server however it is also running RAID1 (two redundant 300gb SCSI hardrives).

That's awesome dude. Do you IT background in your past, or did you just teach yourself most of what you needed to know about server administration?

Yes, 14 years of IT experience, mostly network admin, my last job I was a consultant, I "retired" about a year ago and now all I do is run IronMagazine and IronMagLabs full-time...and I am much happier. :)

Gotcha. While you were swapping your server, I was swapping a hospital server about 45minutes from New Orleans. This was the easiest swap I have done yet. I am not work out from 30 hours of no sleep, so I'm thinking about riding in to New Orleans for St Patty's Day.

we were on the old server for almost 5 years, it was getting maxed out in several ways, e.g. CPU and disk space, it was just time to upgrade to a new one.

If it was maxed out, you did a good job getting the very last out of it. I never thought the site was slow. Nice job on being proactive rather than letting it become a problem before upgrading.

5 year old technology may as well have been a 486 in comparison!
I'm surprised it ran as well as it did too. Lots of I/O going on everyday on that thing.
