The word supplement is defined as: something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen the whole. In other words, as far as diets go, protein supplements make up for any lack of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids or amino acids, that are missing or are not consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet.
