I'm always up for trying something new, so when I saw a bag of "Hard Red Spring Wheat Berries" at Giant Eagle recently I figured I'd give 'em a try. I cooked half the bag up last night in a pot of stewed fresh tomatoes.
The bag said "bring to boil - simmer for 1hr or until tender." I boiled them (in my stewed fresh tomato concoction) for an hour, tried 'em and they were still really chewy. I gave 'em another 15minutes and they were still really chewy. I turned the heat off and left them cooling on the stove for another hour or more (while I was farting around on the computer) and before I went to bed I tried them again. Still, really chewy.
They're "tender", I guess, if hella chewy counts as "tender".
Anyone else ever tried these things? Do they ever get soft (like rice or cracked wheat)? If so, how long did you have to cook 'em!?
