Clinton: 'I take responsibility' for security ahead of Benghazi attack

From Elise Labott, CNN
updated 7:54 PM EDT, Mon October 15, 2012

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Clinton says the buck stops with her regarding a deadly attack on a U.S. consulate
  • She says there was "confusion" about the attack in the first days
  • U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in Benghazi

Lima, Peru (CNN) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the buck stops with her when it comes to who is to blame for security ahead of a deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

"I take responsibility" for what happened on September 11, Clinton said in an interview with CNN's Elise Labott soon after arriving in Lima, Peru for a visit. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, were the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions, Clinton said.

"I want to avoid some kind of political gotcha," she added, noting that it is close to the election.

The attack killed Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other Americans at the consulate.

The Obama administration has been heavily criticized after Vice President Joe Biden said during last week's vice presidential debate that the White House did not know of requests to enhance security at Benghazi, contradicting testimony by State Department employees that requests had been made and rejected. Following the debate, the White House said the vice president did not know of the requests because they were handled, as is the practice, by the State Department.

Clinton also sought to downplay the criticism that administration officials continued to say the attack was a spontaneous product of a protest over an anti-Muslim film, a theory that has since been discarded.
In the wake of an attack, there is always "confusion," Clinton said. But the information has since changed, Clinton said in the interview.

The secretary of state also described the desperate scene in the State Department during the hours of the attack on the night of September 10. It was an "intense, long ordeal" as staff tried to find out what had happened.
Clinton said her mission now is to make sure such an attack will never happen again -- but also that diplomacy, even in dangerous areas like Benghazi, is not stopped.

"We can't not engage," she said. "We cannot retreat."

That is one tough, straight shooting woman... I love her. She has more balls then half of the senate. She's a good combination of heart and hammer, we need a lot more elected officials like her.

who's gonna take responsibility for the lies about the phony YouTube video scenario?

govt. lies to us, if we lie to it we go to prison. fucking bullshit

Hillary is twice the man Barack Hussein will ever be.

That might be true but she might hope that Obama wins reelection or her bid for 2016 is on shaky ground.

So what did they promise her to get her to fall on that grenade? That one is squarely on Obama's shoulders.

Hilary Clinton advised the "powerful leaders" of the European parliament back in 2009
"never waste a good crisis" I would argue, "they also create them"

I trust her like I trust the sun will rise over California tomorrow...

Half the senate individually or combined?

I like that when Osama was killed, Obama ran to the front and took claim for it; fuck the men that actually did it.

An ambassador gets killed. Now it's the woman's fault.

Such a great leader.

Combined.
I have never seen a leader so careful yet forceful with her words. she is a straight shooter, there is no back and forth with her.(I understand she is not a true elected offical and maybe that pays a role)

politics, just another word for lies

I commend her for taking the blunt of it, but it is all just a political shame to take the heat off of Obama. I feel bad for her because she lost her friend and now she has to take the blame for it.

The problem I have with this is, in the military if some one made a mistake sooo severe that resulted in deaths. That person would be relieved of their dutys and forced to retirement or separated depending on rank and time in service. With all honesty if she is willing to fall on this then the punishment needs to fit the crime. I feel that she is just taking the blunt of the problem for the media but in reality nothing is going to happen to her.

thats what I saw, if any one in any job position fails to do their job and it results to the death of people what do you think would happen.

Lets put it this way lets say military personnel at guantanamo bay fail to do their job and detainee's die because of it be garentee you that they would fry for that and lose their career and possibly end up in the brig.

Or if a correction officer or police officer failed to do his job and people died. This shit is bull shit and I think its bull shit she is taking the wrap because she knows she will be protected.
