I want to start bulking but i am worried about gaining a lot of fat. How much fat am I going to gain if I start to bulk but clean bulk?

I am 22% bodyfat right now. Will I be noticably getting fatter or just slightly?

My end goal is not to get huge but to have a body that is toned and a bit ripped.

How much fat is typically put on by people who bulk? Also will the fat be noticable? If my muscles are getting bigger I assume that will kind of hide the excess fat. Yes, No?

IS it better to wait until i hit about12-15 % bodyfat then bulk or bulk 1st?

At 22% BF Bulking wouldn't be my first priority.

Hmmm......Iain has a good point but first I think we should find out your age and what your physical activity is like.

I'm 31, and I used to be at 33% bodyfat. im 5"6 173 pounds currently at 21.8% bodyfat

I am at the gym 6-7 days a week and my trainer suggested that instead of losing bodyfat I should now concentrate on bulking up and gain lean muscle mass.

My new workout program consists of:

Day 1- Chest/Triceps
Day 2- Back/Biceps
Day 3- Legs Shoulders
Day 4 -Chest/Triceps
Day 5- Back/Biceps
Day 6- Legs/Shoulders
Day 7- Rest

Abs are worked every day and Cardio is done 3x week for 20-30 minutes

My previous workout routine was gym 7 days a week with A fullbody workout every other day and intense cardio 4x a week for 60 minutes.

I have been doing this for about 6 months.

My main concern is that he wants me to eat around 3500 calories a day, way up from my 1800-2000 calories that I have been eating daily for the past 6 months.

He said ther fat gain would be negligible and that I would tighten up considerably and gain a lot of muscle mass as long as I ate clean.

I explained my concern, (that I didn't want to gain back the fat I had lost as I was under the impresion that if I started to bulk up and gian muscle I would also gain fat)

He told me that yes I would gain a little bit of fat but it would not be noticed because of the muscle I was gaining. he said i would look trimmer and tighter then I do now because the muscle will "mask" the fat gain.

He said by gaining muscle and boosting my metabolism I would get to my goal quicker then loosing body fat and then trying to gain muscle.

My goal is to be ripped and toned, I don't want to be huge

Your trainer sux and should be fired. I hate him. That workout is AWFUL.

@ 22% BF you should be cutting still....and 1800 cals is pretty low even for a cut.

Skeletal muscle resides under the adipose tissue If I'm Not Mistaken. So building lean mass underneath such a large percentage of bodyfat wouldn't "mask" anything...it would cause the fat to protrude MORE. (I go up a pant size or so after a good bulk and I look a lil softer, I'm also starting out much thinner than you so imagine how you will react)

You should try just establishing healthy eating habits that stick and SLOW DOWN. Working out 6 days a week is WAY too much. Your trainer is making a fucking killing off of you. You are doing abs everyday?? Like crunches. Yeah those don't really do anything except condition the rectus abdominus to do more crunches. Core work would be great...planks, bird dogs and rotational exercises...Cut the lifting back to AT THE MOST 4 days a week unless you are on steroids. And that doesn't mean do cardio 8 times a week for 3 hours either. High intensity cardio can be done 2-3x a week for say 20 minutes tops for what you are trying to do....or should be trying to do. Keep it seperate from your lifting. Workout 4 times weekly and cardio on the off days.
