While walking in the supermarket i went to look for a protein shake but on the way i saw something that caught my eye. I saw a protein bar that said ONLY 3g IMPACT CARBS!!!! so i was like hell yeah 28g of protein and only 3 carbs this is awsome. But then when i looked at the back of the wrapper i saw that it had 26g of carbs??.

So my question is wtf is an "IMPACT" carb and is it the same as a regular carb?

This bar was from EAS i think it was called the AdVANTAGE bar or somthing like that check it out yourself.

Impact carbs are considered the carbs after fiber and sugar alcohols have been deducted. Be careful though some companies don't do it right and deduct alot more than they should.

I just bought a nitro tech protein bar, said the same thing. Something like 30g of carbs but only 3 of those counted????
So does that mean I can subtract 112 Cal from the total. That would be for the 28g of carbs that apparently do not actually get used??

probably... the affect of sugar alcohols on blood sugar is disputable.. if ur tryin to stay in ketosis, stay away

I don't know if I should even accept the deduction for the "sugar alcohols". Can anyone explain just WTF these actually are, and why we can consume them without counting them as carbs?

if we don't count them as carbs, do we count them as Calories? In other words do we metabolize them for energy? If we do then we MUST count them as carbs, especially on a keto diet, bc the whole pont of the keto diet is to provide only fats for fuel, if you give the body an alternative fuel source it will quit burning the reserves (fats).

Yes you count the calories from sugar alcohols except for cals from fiber. The reason they say "Impact" or "Net" carbs is because it has little to no affect on blood sugar. In other words it won't raise insulin (or very little). If you don't raise your blood sugar then you will still remain in ketosis.

Hopefully this answers all your questions.

I would still count the total carbs of the sugar alcohols as well. fiber I would deduct but otherwise I wouldnt risk it. IMO there is no room for protein bars in a good diet. good for an occasional treat.

I'm hoping to move away from met-rx protein bars to something else this year... I just need to get a bag of ON 100% whey and a few jars of all natural peanut butter to store at work... then, i would be set....

Companies had ben using glycerol as a sweetener for the protein bars and not counting then since they were neither classified as a fat or carb officially.
A few years ago the FDA made them start listing glycerol as a carb which all of a sudden jacked up the count on otherwise "low carb" bars...thus leading to the invention of the "net carb" number (as jodi mentioned....they subtract glycerol and other sugar alcohols as well as fiber from the count)
They most certainly add calories and as far as putting you out of ketosis, that will depend on your metabolism. It all depends on how much they affect your blood sugar...best bet is to buy keto strips and test for ketones before and a few hours after eating a bar and see if you are still in ketosis.
I agree with atherjen...protein bars are not a part of a good diet...only an occasional treat. Best bet is to stay away from them...stick to clean foods and protein shakes from reputable companies.

was that too long a response?...sorry!

Here is the skinny on this issue.

The sugar alcohol everyone is referring to is glycerol. Interstingly, your body's stored fat is composed of glycerol with 3 fatty acids attached to it(Triglyceride). In order to use the fatty acids for energy, they have to be liberated from this glycerol "backbone", otherwise, the triglyceride will remain stored or be restored right back where it was. Likewise, if there is no glycerol for the free fatty acids to attach to, they will not be stored. Now, if you are taking in ample amounts of glycerol through protein bars, your body will metabolize it for energy (Yes, it is an energy source) rather than metabolize the triglycerides in your body. So while this sugar alcohol will not have a significant effect on blood sugar, it will slow down lipolysis (fat burning). Since glycerol is not a carbohydrate, you will remain in ketosis, but you will also hinder fat loss. Take in enough, and you could stop fat loss altogether. So you need to ask yourself a question, "What do I want to happen, do I want to be in ketosis, or do I want to lose fat?" You can be in ketosis and not lose any fat and you can lose fat without ever being in ketosis.

:thumb: Glycerol, 1 step away from pure fat.

There is also maltitol and sorbitol.

Maltitiol and sorbitol will give you the shits (not to be graphic or anything...oh well too late)...stay away from them or your bf or gf will be staying away from you!

Thanks Jodi, Dale, Doc and others for all the information. Although I only use them occasionally, I think I'd better get those protein bars out of my gym bag and replace them with "protein shakes to go" for post-workout meal #1 and other on-the-run meals. Do you guys pre-mix your shakes and pack a cooler, or pack the ingredients and mix them up on the spot?

I carry a few baggies of pre-measured powder and a shaker bottle. Then I mix it up when the time comes. That's what so easy about fish oil too. You don't have to worry because you just carry a pill case or another baggie with fish oil caps :)

weird I do the very same! always have a small can of easy-open tuna on me along with premeasured protein powder! just for those times that I cant in my planned meals. :thumb:

i do the same damn thing at school....carry protein powder in one container....fiber in another...and vitamins and EFA's in a pill case...i used to carry tuna but it smells too bad especially at chiropractic school where you work closely with one another....trying to be considerate!

we are a strange bunch!

Glycerine should be treated like fructose. It has four calories per gram, but it does not directly effect insulin or blood glucose.

Thanks again for the tips. I'm a little paranoid about carrying baggies full of white powder with me. I'd better get chocolate. ;)

that is only funny if you aren't seriously asking...lol

lol i wasnt serious its just that i was watching the part in scarface where tony montana dumps his head into a pile of coke right when i was mixing my protein shake.

But i am interested to know the answer.

actually protein is too big of a molecule to be absorbed through the mucous membrane in any usable dose....dont try it
