It has an uber high GI. It depends on what your doing. If your and ectomorph and your bulking, eat whatever the hell you want...

It's fine not even that much worse then brown rice to be honest. An amateur bodybuilder at my gym has white rice every night, and he's still walking around 5% bf.

Not everybody is him though.

White rice is ok if you want it - Remember that the GI is only one part of the equation and is not really an issue once you:
a. Have food in your stomach from prior eating
b. combined appropriately in a meal of fats, fibre and protein
c. fibre out that you are not diabetic or insulin resistant :p

Does GI help - YES... But it's concern is far below that of things such as the big things like total calories, protein, fat, fibre etc etc...

However, do I think it is as good as brown rice?? No... The reason? Well - This is a post from when I answered someone who had a similar question:

Bottom line for me: I don't like white rice - whether it be plain or parboiled.

Why? It is not what it is 'meant' to be!!

Remember - GI is only one factor to consider when looking at a carbohydrate. You also want to consider the fibre, vitamins, minerals and other health benefits of the food.

For this reason brown rice IS preferential over processed rice. It will give you more fibre, more protein, more vitamins (especially your B vitamins), more minerals (especially iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium... ummm and manganese I believe), more healthy fats (which are your EFAs) and more phytochemicals (lignans is a major one in brown rice)... Basically - even if the GI is a little higher than other things, it is better for you!

For those same reasons, barley is also FAR, FAR superior to white or processed rices... As is rye kernels, whole oat groats etc. They are more 'useful' to the body!

So, if you are going simply off GI then there would be no reason as to why you could not use the other stuff (although if you were going soley off GI then, once again, there are better choices than parboiled rice ;) ).... But if you are looking for something MORE in a carb source then go with the non-processed grains every time.

this'll probably make me sound like a racist bastard but i think it is nonetheless true that...

if white rice were so terrible, there would be approximately one billion obese people in china right now.

I eat white rice every night...and sometimes during lunch....check out my photo...that's how good it is

Are you saying white rice gave you that six pack? I bet genetics has nothing to do with it either.

As usual Emma owns me. :D

Brown rice is still a whole lot better for you.

I eat pasta/rice once a week maybe, and this is how I look. I get my carbs from other sources, such as cereal and veggies.

Is 135lbs good?

I eat brown rice, but I've recently started eating pearl barley more and more, good stuff :thumb:

This trainer at the gym was showing me a recent (2006) sports nutrition text book (and I can't remeber the name or author for the life of me) and it had white rice and brown rice listed as the exact same GI? I thought that was strange. I always thought the white was higher since it was missing the fiber.

The same is true for brown/white bread, I think. Sprouted is lower tho i think (again).

It depends on the type of rice - Fibre is not the only thing that effects GI... Things like the type of starch (amylose v's amylopectin), particle size, acidity etc etc all effect the GI too..

But yes, some types of white rice will have the same GI as some types of brown rice...

However, the white rice, as I said in the above post, will still be lacking the vitamins/minerals/fibre of the brown.
