My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register
which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to "print" it myself by
sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Dave
LaBonte (signed)

Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange
County Register:

Dear Editor: So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this
land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear
down the Statute of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being
treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of
entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr.
Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of
immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of
Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand
in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on
their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the
laws and support their new country in good and bad times.

They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households
and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had
waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and
did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one
culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor
laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they
had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father
fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany,
Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave
any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were
Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were
defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated
France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the
German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only
Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country.

Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another
country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been
a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These
immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the
melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same
rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a
different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a
guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not
what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who
landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all
the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a
land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life.
I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by
those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statute of Liberty, it happens
to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I
wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

lawl...

oh bullshit! a lot of the great wonderful immigrants that were here early on fought and died to try and keep slavery alive, burned witches at the stake after accusing them of flying thru the night and taking the form of beasts, you had cattle rustlers, rapists, pedophiles.... stop making yourself look small by posing as superior to other races. it is ignorant behavior. any persons worth as a human being, friend or neighbor has nothing to do with where you came from but it is and should be solely determined by what type of person you are at heart.

so the fuck what someone might be an illegal immigrant, i say by that alone you have no idea if they are a person who would risk their life to save your prejudiced ass from a burning building or not. and your born in america neighbor might just let your ass burn rather than risk his american greedy asshole guarding a too full pot neck.

a lot of the shitbags here ought to be tossed the fuck out if people truly care about this country. for example why not deport anyone caught cheating on their taxes or not voting? most people that live here care less about what this country is than the people risking their lives to get here. until you walk a mile in the other guy's shoes stfu.

i'm really sick of seeing posts like this. it does make people look small, greedy, and blind to the humanity of other races. like a little fat kid fighting over the last slice of pizza "mine! mine! mine!" not even giving a shit that the person he's fighting may not have eaten for days all he feels is his own want. if a person is not willing to judge another calmly, rationally and based on facts per individual then yes they are predjudiced.

You say that so hypocritically it hurts. I have deep respect for you and what you're doing with your children, and life. But, don't sit their and say that shit. People from foreign countries recieve more and more aid and help from America at the expense of American men and women. We're the world's welfare check, and that's how it's gonna stay. I believe in the plight of the people from different countries, and have respect for what they're trying to do in coming to this country, but we need to take care of our own first. Yea, I wish Uncle Sam would give a damn about the man who's collar is blue.

and futhermore a lot of italian and french immigrants from that era that came here never learned engligh. they came here for jobs. my exlandlady and her 4 sisters are all named Marie because her french parents never learned english. my second husband never knew a word his italian grandparents spoke. maybe the woman's decision not to post that letter should have been respected.

"uncle sam" will not even provide halfway decent medical coverage to the men and women who lost their limbs and parts of their minds fighting the good uncle's wars. this country is so full of bullshit it reeks and it is way too easy to point the finger of blame in the other direction. it's a hard hopeless fight to get clear of the mess our country is becoming. fostering blind hatred is a cowards game. one i'm willing to say bullshit to.

this country is a mess. we have all avoided the tough battles and what we have to show for it is the joke our legal system is the joke our political system is. and so now it is trendy to gang up on illegal immigrants. if i scream fire loud enough on the borders maybe we can continue to ignore the shit within those borders...

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? You'd rather live in a different country? Be my guest. Spit all the hypocritical bullshit you want, but until you leave or make a big change for the greater good of all Americans then just shut it. At what point do we stop saying "Damn, our country sucks blah blah blah", and start doing something about it. What? Do you think that these men and women entering the military don't understand the risk their at? I'm sorry, but war is war. You can say all you want that you oppose the war going on in the middle east, but don't sit their and say we don't treat our soldiers good enough. I don't hear any of them complaining. You're insulting them. Like you said before, walk a mile in their shoes or stfu.

i'm saying despite the great sacrifice of today's soldier they will very likely not be treated better than friend's of mine who willingly and proudly fought in vietnam. have you ever seen a grown man cry like a baby because he is in constant pain and the country he gave his body and health for has set it up so that his needs absolutely do not come before what his needs might cost his government. what are you 12? our government for far too long has placed the almighty dollar above all else, including it's citizens. our country is something to be proud of and respect and our government is something that needs to be torn the fuck down and rebuilt.

There is no woman, there was no letter, the e-mail simply repackages old rotted racist and protectiontist drivel pandered to rubes only too happy to consume the offal.

I'm not arguing the point of whether a war is wrong or right or not. I'm arguing that you have no idea what you're talking about. Now you're going back on what you said. The almighty dollar? Guess what, that's how it's always been. That's how every country operates. It's a sad plight, but since the beginning of civilization not much as has changed in this area. It's how it is. It's how it always will be. Our goverment doesn't need to be torn down. It's in another natural phase of human civilization. Have I ever watched a grown man cry over the pain and problems life has given him. Yes, everyman has at one point or another. The point is that these men persevere, and they achieve, and they carry on. They don't ask for pity, and that's not to say they don't ask for help. Like I said. I wish Uncle Sam gave a damn about the man who's collar is blue.

Carlos Mencia missed the point last night too. Immigrants aren't the problem, we all know the USA is an immigrant nation, the problem is the ILLEGAL immigrants. I don't give a shit if you don't know the language, you can learn it, but at least prove to me you are making an effort to become legal. That's all we can ask because whether we like it or not, people will continue to immigrate to the US. It's a damn fine place to live, and trying to keep people out is being hypocritical because chances are, you're of immigrant descent. But my family and probably yours did it LEGALLY, that's the difference. Stop flocking in here like a bunch of red ants in a flood, sign your papers, get your goddamned green card, and shut the fuck up.

It is true that some here would base their arguement on the Race of the immagrants However, Crossing illegally into this country is an action that I object to regardless of skin color. Our Borders need to be enforced for the safety of our people. This is not a matter of "race". It's a matter of National Security.

I do disagre with the author of that "unpublished letter" in that she appears to be drawing the conclusion that ALL immagrants today are a bunch of free-loading sloths seeing to exploit our "entitlement" system for their own selfish gains. I happen to believe that while SOME of the immagrants today may fall into that category, there are those who come to this country with a genuine intent to earn their keep.

I say we just shoot illegal immigrants, regardless of whatever color they are.

I didn't read it, but I'm sure it is inaccurate.

This shit is funny! :D

are you serious?

Little wing, is your shift and or caps lock key broken?
All I want is for once to see you capitalize at the beginning of a sentence.

lol. i mean LOL :) i'm not very angry n all i'm really saying is it makes any person look small and petty to judge any other person without at all knowing what their individual story is. we were lucky to be born here. if i were living in another country and unable to care for my family maybe i too would try to make it to a place where i could. i'd like to think once i got here i could stand a chance of belonging and being accepted as a good person trying to do the best for my family not just seen as a piece of shit because i walked a harder row than someone born into belonging here.

this town where i live is full of native born American males who collect welfare rather that work for $8 an hour planting trees and so on, so Mexicans come in here to do the work. it's not like they are taking jobs away from anyone and i could care less where they're from. i respect that they are willing to work while some guy down the street sees himself too good for the same job but sees no shame in pretending his back is too bad to work or whatever so he can sit on his butt n stay drunk on welfare. maybe he should be sent somewhere on the other side of our borders until he sees the error of his ways.

and i just got back from another day working my ass off to do for an aging parent what she can no longer do. how many of the rest of you have parents who are having a hard time affording all the medications they need? just saying that's how it is, that's how it's always been is a cop out. all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to stand by and do nothing. and a government more focused on it's purse than it's people is well George W. Bush.

and i doubt many of us would be anxious to depend on a Veterans hospital to provide our medical care. a friend confided that he doesn't know what is worse relying on the VA hospital or fearing it will close. i never said anything about being for or against this war. i simply think it is wrong that promises made to American soldiers have consistently not been kept.

n yea i type like shit :) i also answered 700 questions from a hyper 9 yr old, taught him to enter birthdates in his planner and listened to the saga of my daughter's breakup while replying, i hope, somewhat coherently, to this..... :P

yes i'm serious. don't some illegals come here for noble reasons and try to do right? i think it is wrong to paint them all with the same brush and give none the chance to prove their worth or intent. i just can't imagine what i would do if i were in a place where i couldn't assure the health and safety of my children. i'd hate to be met with this kind of blind hostility for trying to.

We have no more need for immigrants, we have enough people. End of story.

Illegal immigrants are breaking the law regardless of their skin color. I honestly don't care if the illegal immigrants stay or go, but if your basis for judgement is right or wrong, those circumventing laws that thousands upon thousands of other people are following probably don't fit the criteria for a "just" person. If you were a person standing in line for something, say food, and some person cut in front of you, you would be pissed. Now, if 5-10 other people cut in front of you with no punishment, what incentive is there to do the right thing and not cut the person in front of you?

and my solution to that is to eliminate the prison population that are unreformable, have 3 strikes etc.... if our country would seriously not stand for murder, rape, child molestation but just get rid of these people rather than let them suck up an infinite amount of money which think about it, if we don't they will, i think we'd have less crime and more elbow room.

Many of that group are Illegal immigrants ;)

Most of you guys are implying that "illegals are breaking the law" .. but arn't U.S. Citizens breaking the law too? What's the point?
