McGwire admits steroids use

He was late to the party.

Funny how A-Rod "confesses" then wins a World Series, and it is no big deal.

Big Mac confesses, and he still will be banished forever. Back in his day, a player using steroids was almost unimaginable, the public 10 years later came to grips that players actually used steroids (oh excuse me, I meant to say "performance enhancing substances"). But A-Hole will probably get in on the first ballot.

Yes, Mac should have confessed much sooner, but things were a whole lot different in the 90's

Everybody is on steroids so who cares.

Excuse my ignorance, but in terms of baseball, even if one does use roids...it still takes quite the hand eye coordination to hit the ball at the perfect time to hit so many HR's.....i suppose the roids help to hit the ball farther but....

Curious other then hit HRs what did Mcgwire do to be considered for the Hall. I just don't see him as a HOFer

That's like saying Brett Hull isn't a Hall of Famer because all he did was score goals.

HR's alone don't make a great player. The Guy had a .263 career batting average, and was a decent 1st Basemen.

Goals are essential in hockey, HRs are not.

He was more of a traditional slugger than the on base machines that today's sluggers are. He was more of a Mickey Mantle/Reggie Jackson type...lots of HR and RBIs but a lower batting average with lots of strikeouts.

Doesn't really compare to Mantle, he was the shit. But very similar numbers to Jackson.

I don't know.... I just don't see Mcgwire as a great player.

You're right. AAS will not improve hand eye coordination from what I've read.

heavyiron?

Hitting a round ball going 90 mph with a cylindrical piece of wood is a mean feat.

But Mac should not have confessed, imo. Look what it got Marion Jones. Jail time, income nuked, and medals stripped.

Everyone (or 99.99999%) is on something, so it's fair game or common sense to use at that level of competition.

Mac, Jones, and any other athlete has no guilt to erase. The witch hunters like Joe Biden and the rest are the ones who should be ashamed.

Prohibition never solved anything.

Your right Iain, Mantle does not belong to that group.
Mantle was fast (for a white guy) baserunner, who could field decently and had a .298 lifetime batting average. He strike out a lot though.
He played on bad knees almost his whole career.

Reggie was not a good outfielder.

This is a Mark McGwire thread. Enough with your Mickey Mantle crap. :p

"I did not take steroids for strength purposes"

What a load of shit. Then what the fuck did you take it for? To shrink your testicles?

"Steroids did not help me hit homeruns"

Again, he needs to shut the fuck up. Even someone with a half a brain wouldn't believe this ridiculous statement.

"I wish i could go back and had never played in the steroid era"

This is the worst of all. He is the one that likely started the steroid era and drove other players to use them around the late 80's early 90's.

I have lost a lot of respect for him and baseball in general. I'm tired of hearing the media overhype this topic and seeing a player come out and admit it every few months or so. Just release the damn list and get it over with. Baseball also needs a salary cap. Letting the Yankees buy their way to every championship is fucking ridiculous.

I also have no more interest in the NBA. It is an absolutely fixed sport that focuses on gambling and corrupt referees who give stars preferential treatment. That and it has also become a more thuggish, ghetto league where it's 90% black and consists of 1-on-1 play and no team work.

I just hope Roger Goodell wont fuck up the NFL any time soon.

Stop there, if your a Boston fan you would know your team is also guilty of this. Go ask the Kansas city fans how they feel about these teams......wait, the teams with the highest payroll doesnt always gaurenttee a WS.
N.Y. Yankees $201,449,289
New York Mets 135,773,988
Chicago Cubs 135,050,000
Boston 122,696,000

The Mets finished last.

Boston by no means is a frugal team, what team other than the Yankees can and will the bid for $51,111,111.11 for a player, that being Daisuke Matsuzaka

Basketball has been predominantly Black for a while....during the Jordan years which was when I mostly watched it it seems like they had the same amount.
In fact now with the influx of Asian and European players maybe the percentage is lower.

Definitely takes much more than steroids to hit major league pitching, although I suppose the ball would fly further off the bat with the added strength.

In the years McGwire says he used roids, his Batting Average, HR's and HR-per-AB ratio all went up significantly.

Couple points I have made on my thoughts on Steroids and hitting.

I voted no, clearly Bonds was a phenomenal player before steriod use. But I do understand the reasoning for considering the Asterick.

Take a look at his stats pre 2000 and post 2000 quite a remarable difference

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats/mlb_individual_stats_player.jsp?playerID=111188&statType=1

Pre 2000 Avg HR per Season 32
Post 200 Avg HR per Season 52

Pre OB% 407
Post OB% 535

Pre Slug% 561
Post Slug% 611

Pre Bat avg .288
Post Bat avg .341

Obviously Bonds has quite a remarkable improvement to his preformance since 2000, in which it would seem quite obvious Steriods have enhanced his natural abilities. Let alone the Fact that he should be on the down side of his career not the upswing at the age of 40.

It is foolish to think that steriods have not helped him get the single season record, nor more than likely the Career HR record. No doubt he has amazing Hand-eye coordination, why else would he be in the major leagues? Hitting a ball is a matter of hundreths of second for reaction time. Increased strenght allows one to get the back through the hitting area at a quicker rate, giving Bonds an opportunity to make better contact with the ball.

However, I voted no, because there are always going to be circumstances that could have impacted ones performance. He is a great athlete and nothing could take away from that, steroids or no steroids.

No they won't you are right

Bonds already had an exceptional eye at the plate. Howvever the increased bat speed will make a huge difference. Now instead of not being able to get the bat around fast enough to fight off the inside pitch, Bonds can can get the meat of the bat around to make solid contact.

All those Deep fly balls now become Homruns from the increased BAt speed. Strike outs where he couldn't get the bat around now have the possibilty of being hits. There are so many scenarios of improvements to situations from improved bat speed, I could go on and on.

No one is arguing that he doesn't have a great eye at the plate and there is no doubt that steroids don't enhance that, but they are allowing him to take better advantage of his abilites.

The Red Sox paying Papeldouche $850,000 more than the Rays are paying their entire starting rotation.
The Boston Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon came to terms on a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday night. The deal, which means the Red Sox and Papelbon will avoid arbitration for the second straight offseason, has a base salary of $9.35 million with incentives that could make it worth more than $9.5 million, according to an industry source.

In addition to the base salary, Papelbon will receive a $50,000 bonus if he finishes 60 games (he finished 59 last season). The deal also includes standard incentives for MVP, Cy Young, All-Star Game and so on.
The contract is the largest ever for a relief pitcher with four years or less in service time, topping Eric Gagne's $8 million in 2005. Seven big league closers have contracts for $10 million or more. Papelbon's deal puts him just under that number.

And Javier Vazquez is getting 11.5 million per season. Not bad for a back of the rotation guy.

Oh no doubt the Yankees can roll up $100 bills and light them up....but I do laugh hard when a Met and Red sox fan cry's about the money the Yankee fan spends.
Now I can understand a team like the Twins crying poverty but the poster above complaining about a salary cap?

A friend of mine was complaining about how much th e Yanks spend and when I told him his team is #2 in spending he couldn't come up with an excuse.
