Bears hire Martz as offensive coordinator | Sports | Reuters

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Strong-armed quarterback Jay Cutler will get to work with pass-happy Mike Martz, after the Chicago Bears announced they had hired the former NFL head coach as offensive coordinator on Monday.

Martz, who had hired current Bears head coach Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator when he was running the St Louis Rams, was credited with helping develop quarterback Kurt Warner and a potent attack dubbed "The Greatest Show on Turf."

As offensive coordinator under head coach Dick Vermeil in 1999, Martz helped the Rams win the Super Bowl with an aerial attack that scored more than 500 points in the season.

Martz replaced Vermeil as head coach in 2000 and went on to compile a 56-36 record in five and a half seasons in that role, including a trip to the Super Bowl in the 2001 season.

The four coaches who followed Martz in St Louis have combined for a 18-51 record.

Ron Turner was fired as offensive coordinator after Chicago's 7-9 season.

Martz, 58, went on to serve as offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions in 2006-07 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2008 after leaving the Rams.

Martz definitely has more potential than Turner ever had. I still don't understand the hiring of Turner. Why hire on offensive coordinator who was the head coach at Illinois? Give Martz some time and see what happens. Maybe he'll be able to straighten out Cutler's attitude. I heard reports that one of the reasons it took so long to get an O-coordinator was because 1). Cutler was allowed a say in the interview process (no wonder a pass happy offensive coordinator was hired) and 2). No one really wanted to work with Cutler's attitude.

I figure it can go either way with Martz...
I just expect it to go south since the offensive line has been so weak, and the reciever corps so damned thin. Hopefully they use Aromashadou more next year and let Hester work special teams.

As for Ron Turner, I agree, I have no idea why they hired him, or kept his retarded ass for so long.

Better than Zorn who they were going for a few weeks ago.

I saw a rumor that the Bears may be shopping Olsen for draft picks. I really hope not that guy has amazing potential and he's already pretty solid. I'd rather just do shitty again this year keep Olsen and get decent picks next year.Who would we get to replace Olsen with those picks anyway? Not a good idea if you ask me.

Next January's headline...Martz New Bears Head Coach...

Heh, I'd love to see Lovie take a walk...

I also read that about Olsen, but I think that's just some sports writer's 'possible scenario'. Personally, if they were going that route, I think it should he Hester rather than Olsen.

A part of me wishes the Bears when after Shanahan...I still like Lovie but I feel that the Bears are moving from a defensive mindset to O. I mean the D is getting older and their weapons are not as effective (or healthy). Plus look at the O...Cutler, Olsen, Forte, Knox. To me that looks like a young O that can grow into something. Throw in another receiver (and yes Hester has improved but I wouldn't rely on him). Build up you O-Line and the Bears just switched from being known as a dominate D to a potent O. Anyway Martz has been known to be pass happy and the Bears traditionally pound the ball so they're already shifting philosophies. I guess you have to when you gave up so much for a qb.

thats bad man...mike martz is signed with the chicago bears..lovie smith is gonna have his hands full with jay too

Bears picked up Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor in free agency.
That's pretty awesome in my opinion.
However, they cut loose McKie and apparently aren't planning to offer Ogunleye anything.
That's sad...I'd love to see a Bears defensive line with Ogunleye on the left and Peppers on the right and a healthy Tommie Harris in the middle.

Bears also dropped Nathan Vasher, they picked up a corner from Indy, so maybe the secondary won't be so damned weak...
