Well, when I was around 12 I was diagnosed with a slight curvature of the spine. Today I was having some mild back pains after training back the night before so I went to the E.R, and got an X-ray. I was told what I already knew by a orthopedic doctor * you have a very mild form of scoliosis* The x-ray looks just the same as it did when I was 12, So I asked him the major question that was running threw my mind all day .Can I still lift weights ? He told me to take a week off, and just be careful when lifting, and he was aware I was talking about HEAVY weights with deads and squats.Im still scared to death though, first pain I've ever had in my back. I'm going to see a Sports doctor soon, but any advice/help From a person with knowledge on the matter would help. Here's One of the X- rays :pissed:

Maybe just do leg press instead of squats and lay off the deads for a while. I know it sucks, but I had to do it a few years ago. I'm just now getting back into doing squats, so it might take some time.

(I had the same diagnosis as you when I was about 16. I'm not sure if that is what caused my back problems or if it was an injury when I was younger. Regardless, I've always had trouble with my lower back.)

First of all..where in your back is your pain....your scoliosis is in your mid thoracic region...so if your pain is in your low back it may be totally unrelated.

Many people have a slight scoliosis around heart level....not really sure what casues this but it is not an uncommon finding. I also have a slight scoliosis around the same level. And I have always lifted heavy with no real problems unless I let my form slip.

On heavy deads and squats your form has to be immaculate if you want to avoid injury...dont just assume you are doing it right....have someone who really knows watch and critique you.

Also...make sure the doctor you go to is familiar with weightlifters and how important we think these lifts are....usually to cover their ass they'll tell you to avoid certain things that you may not want or need to avoid.

Let us know how it goes.....and props for actually posting your x-rays...very helpful.
