Morrison approved for return to ring

Posted: Tuesday February 20, 2007 5:26PM; Updated: Tuesday February 20, 2007 7:45PM

CHESTER, W.Va. (AP) -- Former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison said Thursday a positive HIV test that ended his career more than a decade ago was inaccurate and he is staging a comeback to take care of some unfinished business.

Morrison, 38, will appear in a four-round fight Thursday at Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort.
"I'm negative and I've always been negative and that should be the end of it," Morrison said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

"The rug was yanked out from under my feet by a misdiagnosis," he said. "All I want to do is fight ... It's unfinished business."

State Athletic Commissioner Steve Allred said Tuesday he approved Morrison's participation in Thursday's fight after reviewing medical records and consulting with the Association of Boxing Commissions' medical review committee. Confidentiality laws prevent Allred from discussing Morrison's medical history or the records he reviewed, he said.

West Virginia does not have mandatory blood testing for boxers.
"I assure you that West Virginia is doing due diligence to make sure everyone who steps into the ring is healthy," Allred said.

Morrison won the WBO title in 1993 after beating George Foreman on points. He lost it later that year. Morrison, who was featured in the movie "Rocky V," also served a couple of years in an Arkansas prison on drug and weapons charges.

He announced he had human immunodeficiency virus in February 1996 and his last fight occurred that November in Japan when he knocked out Marcus Rhode in the first round. After that fight he said he was trying to erase the fear of AIDS.
Morrison said Tuesday that he has taken several tests while preparing for his comeback and all have been negative for the virus.

He has signed a contract with boxing promoter Top Rank for at least eight fights this year.
"I have no doubt I'll be a better fighter than I ever was before," he said. "I am more relaxed. Something that comes along with age causes you to simmer a bit."

Morrison, who is 46-3-1, will face John Castle of Indianapolis in the four-round match, which is one of seven scheduled at Mountaineer. Castle's record is 4-2.

So he claims, this seemed so long ago.
What a shame, I know his life changed because of it.

His family owned a gym where I grew up and I boxed there.I have actually done some one on one work with him and have alot of memoribillia from then. That was one of the most exciting things I had ever got to do growing up.Couldn't spar with him because of the HIV but it was still fun.

Hmm, from what I remember he was awful.

His toughest fights were easily Mercer and Lewis and they both put him away convincingly. He outlasted the aged Foreman and put away an over the hill Ruddock. Always had heavy hands and a weak chin, so you knew there was most likely gonna be a knock out in his fights. I remember after he beat Foreman the whole black v white heavyweight battle was being pushed for him to fight Lewis, but he got yolked in his next fight, by some big black English guy.

Something doesn't seem right. How many years ago was he diagnosed with AIDS? It destroyed his career and he is just trying to correct it now? What was he doing all those years?

It's not like they just do one AIDS test and then never do another one or check anything. Obviously it wouldn't have taken too long to figure out that the diagnosis wasn't correct... so why wait over a decade. If I told the world I had AIDS and it ended my career, and then I found out it was a mistake... I'd be having a press conference the same day I found out. Why let the world believe you have AIDS for over a decade?

It just doesn't make sense.

Ehhh... I'd be real leary of getting into the ring with him if I didn't see the negative test results, certified, with my own two eyes.

He had an interview on the Dan Patrick show today. This guy is a fuck chop.

He apparently had a false positive because of all the steroids he was taking(his words) He had a few false positives.

He then went to jail for a while.

Funniest thing was he said he would be a contender again in 1-2 months HAHA

He also said he is a devout Christian and has found religion again. Then he goes on to say he will pray to god all the way to the bank HAHA.

As I stated earlier I know his family and they have never doubted that he was HIV positive and he has been speaking at seminars for years to children that are HIV positive so if he isn't positive he has just found out recently.

Did any of you know that John Wayne was actually Tommy's Great Uncle.Hence Tommy "The Duke"Morrison. He is supposed to be down here next wednesday and I am really curious to get some info:bulb:

I think they mentioned it before everyone of his fights.

I think they mentioned it before everyone of his fights.

Just making sure everyone knew.Just incase someone had never saw him fight. It seems like the only thing anyone knows about him is that he was in THE GREATEST ROCKY of all time Rocky 5.

God I hope you know I was kidding about the greatest Rocky of all time comment.

We all know it was ...6:D

Morrison has power and some speed, but no chin. He lacks the athleticism to compete at the top level. He'll do alright vs. mediocre fighters but he would not beat a Lewis or even a Tyson.

He's a nice guy and I hope he can recover some of the momentum he lost from that messed up diagnosis ...

I agree, and his age and time out of the ring will hurt him as well. However I don't think it's a messed up diagnosis just yet.I hope I'm wrong but am skeptical.

He said he has had a bunch of clean test recently. Including West Virginia(where the fight is) and they don't test, but made him.

I am not sure what happened, and don't know about his claim saying that the steroids were the cause of the false positive.

Yup. John Wayne's real name is Marion Morrison.

I think West Virginia is one of the only states that does not have a mandatory blood test.Thats another reason I think it is ironic this is coming up now.I'll try to find a link .

Yeah something is fishy.

If he did test positive then he is the first person to get rid of it.
