multiple reps

I just started doing multiple reps on muscle groups recently, and I'm still strugging to get how much weight to use.

Maybe its just me, but should I be trying to figure how to get all the weights fairly similar, or is it fine to start off with the heavier weights on the first set then just keep going to failure on the next few. i.e. today I started off heavy on my various arm muscles, and by the end of my workout, I was doing hammer curls with 20 lbs and felt like a tool, or some noob who just burned himself out and couldn't pace himself - is that normal?
 
Maybe he just went 1 Rep for 1 excerise? :shrug:
