Nodar Kumaritashvili dies in luge run

You guys may have heard about that olympian Nodar Kumaritashvili who died today while practicing the luge course.

He was only 21. The impact is really hard to watch.

He hit the back of his head. Impact probably broke his neck.

Poor guy, only 21. RIP.

Hit hit at 88mph. It probably crushed his entire insides. That was terrible.

Yeah, he definitly had severe internal injuries. Still photos showed he was losing allot of blood from his mouth and nose.

Reminds me of how fragile and fleeting life can be. I'm very grateful for reaching 47. Many, including Kumaritashvili , don't get half that far.

just terrible...not sure if it would have helped, but why weren't the steel ibeams padded? seems like it wouldn't be that expensive to throw some padding up? Like on the basketball pole in the NBA...RIP, poor guy

Throw up some plexi-glass, I don't understand why after a fast turn it was open like that.....

Even with padding, at that speed of 88 MPH hitting a stationary object the impact doubles, right?

Should definitely be a wall of some sort.

Anway, they could honor the guy, by maybe naming the last turn after him.

It could be called, "Nodar's Corner."

the horrible part of this tragic accident is that a plexi-glass wall would have saved this kid's life.

they were saying yesterday that he was one of the least experienced lugers and had his doubts about going down the course at whistler from the get go.

At that speed it would have taken massive padding to probably even keep him alive yet paralyzed. Plexi windows for sure.

I guarantee he had massive head trauma it looked like the back of his helmet made first contact, even with padding his brain would have had the severe inertia....

I bet the organizers forgot to consider the danger of the track design. All they had in mind was speed and record and publicity. They had them all right!

I'm 22. It's even more tragic to know someone as good looking and as good as he is died at a very young age. I can't believe he was still alive and was being resuscitated. It must have been very painful. He probably suffered puntured lungs and brain.. Unspeakable. Life is fragile.
