President Barack Obama stands with Vice President Joe Biden as he makes a st...

WASHINGTON - Spurred by a horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama vowed to send Congress new policy proposals for reducing gun violence by January.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," Obama said Wednesday. He tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading an administration-wide effort to create the new recommendations and pledged to push for their implementation without delay.

The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control despite a series of mass shootings in his first term, bristled at suggestions that he had been silent on the issue during his first four years in office. But he acknowledged that Friday's deadly shooting had been "a wake-up call for all of us."

Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning.

The president also called on Congress Wednesday to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and to pass legislation that would close the gun show "loophole," which allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check. Obama also said he wanted Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips.

"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence."

The president's announcement Wednesday underscores the urgency the White House sees in formulating a response to the Newtown shooting. The massacre has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some concern that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

Obama said it was "encouraging" to see people of different backgrounds and political affiliations coming to an understanding that the country has an obligation to prevent such violence.

Appealing to gun owners, Obama said he believes in the Second Amendment and the country's strong tradition of gun ownership. And he said "the vast majority of gun owners in America are responsible."

"I am also betting that the majority, the vast majority, of responsible law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few from buying a weapon of war," Obama said.

Obama also tasked the Biden-led team with considering ways to improve mental health resources and address ways to create a culture that doesn't promote violence. The departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security, along with outside groups and lawmakers, will all be part of the process.

Biden's prominent role in the process could be an asset for the White House in getting gun legislation through Congress. The vice president spent decades in the Senate and has been called on by Obama before to use his long-standing relationships with lawmakers to build support for White House measures.

The president challenged the National Rifle Association, the country's most powerful gun lobby and key backer of many Republican politicians, to join the broader effort to reduce gun violence as well.
"Hopefully they'll do some self-reflection," Obama said of the NRA.

The NRA made its first comments since the shooting on Tuesday, promising to offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

Obama said that while taking the necessary steps to reduce gun violence would take commitment and compromise, he said it could be achieved if Washington summons "even one tiny iota of the courage of those teachers, that principal in Newtown summoned on Friday."

Will the democrats be giving up their personal security details? Why can they have armed bodyguards with firearms to protect them and their familes, but we can't have them to protect ours? Fuckin' hypocrites.

Chuch Schumer, the biggest ant-gun democrat in congress has his a CCP and is rumored to own a MAC-10.

I don't know all the fine details on what he is going to try to pass and I am sure its not good for gun owners, but my opinion as a gun owner who owns AR-15's, R700's set up to shoot 1000+ yards, and ect. I believe it should be a law where every gun owner own a safe and secures his weapons, if they are not in hands reach. So having your glock bed side would still be fine, but there is no reason to leave a gun that can be easily stolen. I am really not worried about my future kids because they will grow up shooting guns and respecting them. We all ready have my 3 year old niece shooting her 22 rifle that is made for her. She respects guns and understands them at 3. As for the just being able to buy a gun with no back ground check I don't feel that is ok. The last thing I want is making it easy for guns to end up in the wrong hands. As a gun owner I am proud to know I have the right to own a gun and people who do not deserve that right, I am proud to keep my guns out of their hands.

As for the assault rifle shit, I would love to own a fully auto .45 machine gun with LARGE capacity mags, but do I really need it. Now the bullet button is just freaking stupid, it does nothing but annoy me and is EASILY modified to function normally. I personally feel that you should be able to take a college like course that you pay for that is hands on and after that you can become eligible to own a fully auto weapon and in order to qualify for it you must be a past gun owner for x amount of years. In a perfect world there would be no gun rules and no fucking idiots. Teachers will carry open carry and so will the guy at the super market. But in reality I am willing to compromise for more strict rules but not this bull shit that guns are whats fucking killing these kids and we need to ban them. Honestly I think it comes down to parenting, kids just need a damn ass whooping period. You get fucked up parents that come home drunk molest their kids and expect them to turn out fine. Society in a whole is to soft and we allow the sick and weak to flourish.

Then the media glamorizes this shit, the one thing every one wants period in their life is to be remembered and purposeful. Unfortunately if your fucked up in the head that means killing kids will get you that because no you will be apart of history. They need to start putting in a shooter who remains nameless did this. I do not benefit one bit knowing the kids name other then my own personal curiosity. The family?s should know and thats about it, not only will it protect his family that the fuck head tarnished their name but he will get no fucked up recondition for what he did.

There all full of shit, they want to take our guns away. They are saying the second amendment is only the right to bear arms bla bla bla to form a militia encase the people need to take over. Well they say well the National Guard was formed as a militia to protect the citizens. Where the national guard is ran by the gov't so that makes no fucking logic at all.

They want to remove our power, but adding in stupid laws and ect.

I was watching a video from penn jillette, and he made some interesting points. Lets say for entertainment we LOVED Obama, that he was the perfect president and did GREAT things and every one was happy. Well the problem is Obama is still making laws that makes the president more powerful and takes away from the power of the people. Such as this health care more taxes to be taken from us. But Obama is a good guy (just entertain me) but what happens in 4 years with all this NEW power the president has and we get a horrible president. That abuses the power that redirects our taxes for his personal gain and ect. People need to realize no matter which president you like period the power needs to remain in the people not the gov't.
