An Ohio third-grader weighing more than 200 pounds has been taken from his family and placed into foster care when county social workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight.

The Plain Dealer reports that the 8-year-old is considered severely obese and at risk for diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

The Ohio Health Department estimates more than 12 percent of third-graders statewide are severely obese. The removal of the Cleveland child is the first state officials can recall of a child being put in foster care for a strictly weight-related issue.

Lawyers for the mother say the county is overreaching in taking the child. They say the medical problems the boy is at risk for do not yet pose an imminent danger to his health.

Cuyahoga County does not have a specific policy on dealing with obese children, the Plain Dealer reported. A spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Family Services told the newspaper that the agency removed the boy because case workers considered this mother's inability to get her son's weight down a form of medical neglect.

Authorities claim the child's weight gain was caused by his environment and that the mother wasn't following doctor's orders -- an allegation the mother disputes.

"This child's problem was so severe that we had to take custody," Mary Louise Madigan told the Plain Dealer. The agency worked with the mother for more than a year before asking Juvenile Court for custody of the child, she said.

Wow! That's kind of crazy, I mean what the state can do, I would think that there are kids in much more sever situations then getting fed to much (if that was the case). I wonder what the mom looked like and how she took care of herself?

GD! I wonder if the parents are obese themselves?

Naw, I'd be considered obese using the states criteria, they're probably fat asses too.

Or, maybe, they were inspired by the Michael Oyre story so much, they wanted to create the next Big Mike.

Excellent. I'm tired of seeing fat kids. Their parents should be thrown in jail.

...The agency worked with the mother for more than a year...

It seems the kid already comes from a shaky family if the Department of Children and Family Services was already checking them out. 200lbs is 4x the average weight of a 3rd grader.

Feeding your kid like that will kill it quicker than if the kid smoked... And letting your kid smoke is clearly child neglect/abuse

just saying...

I agree, but America is in a major epidemic. We are all about excess, and food is just another one of those. You better believe my 2 year old son, will never get that fat. There is no excuse for it, and that includes smoking and or buying alcohol for your under age kids.

as much as i agree that the child is in an improper environment and is probably being encouraged to eat too much of the wrong food and is probably being made fun of in school etc for his weight id rather see a fat child than one who was subjected to sexual or mental abuse in foster care ..it's an issue for sure

Holy shit! 200lbs in 3rd grade?

Definitely fair. Horrible parents that kid has.

I don't think they're taking him away forever. They'll put him back, but only with monitoring and regular checks.
