Please Help

How are you doing guys. I am just starting to get involved with Philosophy. I wanted to write a paper on philosophy for my english class in college but I wanted to be more direct and I wanted something on more than just what is philosphy. So I went and spoke with a Philosophy Prof. and he gave me a few ideas. I was wondering if you guys could help me break down what these mean?


He said I should Explain Kant's view on the subject of marriage. Is there anyway you guys can tell me what was new and distinctive about it? I need some help evaluating it. I dont really understand this and I can use help.

One othe option he said I should think about writing on was do I agree or disagree with Rouseau's assessment of the consenquences of living in civilized society? I really am unsure and I need opinions. Again I love Philosophy and I am very new at it and I thought these questions would be a great place to start.


PS: as of now on my own I am reading Kant, Rousseau, Hume, and Descartes.

The empiricists v. continental rationalists, German Idealism, enlightenment, romanticism. One of my favorites is Hume b/c he is devastating in his criticism, the simple question, "how do you know?" just destroys any pretension to knowledge posited by Descartes and all the bs that flows from cogito ergo sum.

Rousseau's a romantic whose view of the natural man as inherently good--noble savage--is foremost. Society is an artificial construct that perverts man's natural inclination toward 'authentic' expression and living. Society corrupts through imitation, intimidation and fear. The social contract is really a creation of the powerful as a way of institutionalizing the corrupt features attendant to society. That's a start. Pick up some good commentary on Rousseau. This might be evident but try the Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

I don't recall shit about Kant and marriage. Except that Kant believed that in and through reason we grasp moral obligation or categorical imperative--something like a universal law of nature--always treat x as an end in itself and never a means. That's how we are moral. Marriage I'm guessing probably runs antithetical to that where the woman is subjugated to the will of the man as a servant. I don't know.

Pick a theme from which to operate. Look at the topic of freedom. For a twist play off of the existential notion of freedom for something instead of the hackneyed freedom from something. Freedom to become. The tension of being and becoming--arguably the oldest philosphical issue--in a society. Rousseau has shit to say about that.
