My wife's prego, and is wondering about nutrition, what to eat, and what not to eat. Any suggestions?? She's 19 weeks today.

Couple things to stay away from:

Herbal Teas (some of them can make her sick during pregnancy)
Alcohol (obviously)
Large amounts of Fish (Mercury)

Her diet should be healthy:
Animal proteins, lots of green veggies, fruit, whole grains, healthy fats etc...

During the 2nd trimester she should increase her calories by 300 per day.
Proteins, Healthy fats from dairy and eggs, peanut butter, cheese, salmon once a week, and avocados, and carbs such as fruit, beans, hummus and whole grains. Eat slow and smaller meals. Make sure she is drinking plenty of water and getting enough minerals in her vitamins. An iron supplement is good to add here.

During the 3rd trimester, add another 100-200 calories per day of the same foods above. Again, eat slow, drink plenty of water and have smaller meals. Keep up with the vits and minerals and don't forget the iron.

Excellent. She's currently on pre-natal vits, and Expecta. Her Dr. told us today that she would possibly need to raise her intake of Iron towards the end, since she already is getting some with her vits. Do you know anything about Expecta?

Thanks Jodi

No sorry I don't know about Expecta. I'll look it up though.

Ahh it's a DHA supplement! Good! This is great. Fish is a good source for DHA but in order to get it, she would have to have large amounts of fish. See my comment above about staying away from large amounts of fish. So this is great because she gets the omega3's with the mercury. I know during pregnancy women need more DHA than EPA so this is definitely good for her.

Excellent! Thanks alot. She is a teacher at a place where all the kids are in trouble, or pregnant, and one of the kids is due in a month. That girl is on this Expecta, and told Abby to ask her Dr. about it, so we did, and now she's taking it. I looked it up, but needed it put into English for me!!
