Progressing with each set

Just wondering,
you always here that you need to progress in weight each time you workout. Like on Monday you bench 225 for 3 sets of 8 then the next Monday try 230 for 3 sets of 8. This logic just doesn't make since to me. I mean after a few years of lifting, hell, we'd be benching 2500#'s. There's got to be a certain point before you plateu for good. It's obvious that a weightlifter can't bench as much at age 55 as he did when he was 25.

It just pisses me off when I read muscle mags and exercise related articles that state that you need to progress in weight each time you hit the gym. That is absolutely impossible. Just wanted to get other opinions.
 
maybe your putting on too much weight.. I think you should progress at the most 2 weeks.

I never take the articles to seriously anymore. At first I did, but not now. You got to be juicing in my opinion to do some of that stuff.
 
There is always going to be a limit to wich you can lift no matter what your on.
 
It's all about slow progression.
If you were to slap on some micro plates it might be different.
Don't limit how you gauge you're progression by just weight lifted, use other variables like tempo,rest periods, total volume lifted, reps etc....

I wish I could make progress with every workout, but I dont. I sometimes go 2-3 months without making gains in weight lifted. Its progress over the long haul that matter. I agree with the previous post to to use other criteria to measure your progress. Thinking only in terms of weight lifted IMO can be detrimental to your training at times. Sacrificing form to be the biggest problem resulting from trying to prematurely increase poundages.
