one thing i have been wondering is
i know how much protein and many calories i should be consuming
But do you 100% need those numbers to make the gains in respect to your previous diet?

lets say your 180lbs good physical shape bad diet dont work out and you start going to the gym

would any change in diet for the good be sufficient for a while? or do you need these numbers from the get go

Adding exercise alone will have an effect - The degree of which depends partially on your goals (that is, if you want fat loss or muscle gains) and also whether you are female or male (it has more of an effect in males - females tend to compensate for exercise and will unconsciously increase their food intake).

However, following a good diet as well (not necessarily a BB'ers diet, but a good, healthy balanced diet) will create a somewhat synergistic effect - and the impact will be faster and more noticeable.
