Is protein neccessary to make muscle gains? I want to get big, but I am afraid of protein shakes because I don't trust anything that comes out of GNC because a lot of it hasn't been tested by the FDA and could be causing cancer. If it is 100% safe, then what is the best to buy?

Yes, protein is necessary to build muscle. But it's not necessary to get it from supplements. You can get all of the protein you need from eating plenty of meat and dairy products. Fish, beef, poultry, milk, cheese, etc. Some people just find it hard to get enough protein from food, and it can be difficult if you work full-time. I eat 5 times per day, and one of my meals is a protein bar, I also use a whey protein drink with my breakfast.
So, if you fear using supplements, then spend your money on quality food!

got muscle?

I wouldnt worry much about getting cancer from a protein powder. Just buy a quality brand. I dont like GNC because they mark up the manufacturer's listed retail! I dont consider protein powders supplements. I consider them food. Any "supplement" that is supplying my body with nutrients is food in my book. In fact, most are alot healthier than the foods we eat. I dont spend heavily on "supplements". The ones I do buy usually contains the nutrients necessary to support my training.

Prince gave some good advice.
I agree.

ALL GOOD!!

I like Optimum Nutrition's Protein powders and EAS Myoplex Lo carb bars.

Unfortunately, what you may have to do is just try some until you find what you like!!

Let me get this right your supposed to get 1g of protein per lb of your body weight? Where does all that come from. I take one protein shake of about 30 g (Pro Performance 100% Whey) every day after I lift. Do i need to take more?
