Ok, so this is my first rodeo so to speak w/ long distance running. I used to be a sprinter and ran hurdles and relays. Now I'm training for the White Rock 1/2 Marathon and am getting into my longer runs (6+ miles). I have noticed that when I run over 5 miles; when I finish I get horrible cramps in my stomache and lower abdomen. They last for about an hour or more and then go away. Does anyone know what causes this and or what I can do to prevent it? Thanks.

i think it has something to do with your liver running out of ATP (a cellular energy source). your liver and stomach are very near each other. you should try to eat more carbs, and just spend time training. your body will adapt. when running extremely long distances, it may be necessary to eat high calorie, easily digestible foods part way through to keep your body fuelled.

i have also heard that this type of stomach cramping is due to improper breathing or running form. i am pretty sure it has to do with ATP, though. I heard a lecture on it once- but maybe the guy was nuts : )

keep it up!
