Hey Everyone.

Since April my trainer has started tracking my bodyfat and lean mass. Here are the numbers

April 16th 2008 Weight: 260 lbs FM: 74.1lbs LM: 185.9 BF%: 28.5
May 17th 2008 Weight: 253 lbs FM: 63.7 lbs LM: 189.3 BF%: 25.2
July 24th 2008 Weight: 273 lbs FM: 66.3 lbs LM: 206.7 BF% 24.3
Sept 3rd 2008 Weight: 260 lbs FM: 61.6 lbs LM: 198.4 BF% 23.5

Now I'm thinking we had my weight wrong in July. As it showed a significant weight gain yet the % of BF decreased on par with the other numbers. Does that seem like a reasonable conclusion? My trainers scale seems sketchy once in a while.

I hit the gym 3 days a week for about an hour and try to get cardio in the other days but it usually doesn't work out that way :-) I haven't been keeping that close of a watch on my diet but have just generally cut out junk food and limiting portion sizes and eating more frequently. Anyway just thought I would post this up and get some opinions on the progress. I have been going to the gym for just over a year now. When I started I was 280lbs but we didn't check BF untill this past spring. Anyway let me have it.

Cheers
DD

It looks pretty good. However, you did not tell us what your goal is. I cannot really tell you how well you are progressing if I do not know your goal. For example, as of December 10th 2007 I weighed 260 pounds. Today I weigh 182. Original Bf was around 31% and now I am at 10.2%. My goal was to torch all the fat on my body that I could and then start building muscle. I was down to 175 at my lowest weight and then I began building muscle and have since then put on 7 pounds and kept my BF% the same.

Your diet is VERY important to success if your goal is to just lose weight. Just cutting out junk food is not going to cut it. You should be keeping a food log and and watching your macros. Most people on these forums have been in the body building business for longer than I have so they are better versed in all of these topics but I just share what worked for me. I believe that a lot of cardio is important. Many people will tell you that cardio is not an efficient way of burning fat (at least compared to weight lifting) and too much cardio promotes muscle loss. But if you are just trying to lose weight I recommend HIGH cardio and (6 days per week 40-50 minutes per day, this can be split in to two different sessions if must be) 4 days a week of weight lifting. You won't be building too much muscle but as I was losing my weight and follow this routine I also did not lose muscle. I was able to keep my muscle about where it was at and once I got the fat gone I was able to start building muscle from there.

I think your progress so far is good, but again I just don't know what you are trying to achieve. Once again I would like to say (before I get blasted by other members) that this is what worked for me. It may not be the best and most effecient way of losing massive amounts of weight but it did work for me. If I were you I would listen to what the other members have to say as well (especially if you get a post from Built or P funk because they have great things to say).

Anyway, keep up the good work!

I guess I haven't really set a goal other than looking good LOL. According to BMI charts for my weight I should be 185 lbs. Now I realize that BMI is probably not the best thing to go by as I'd look damn silly if I was 185. I'm thinking of aiming somewhere around 220 to 230. I'm thinking a BF in the mid to high teens. Does this sound about right?

I guess it depends on your definition of "looking good" for me to be satisfied with the way I look I would need to be somewhere between 5-7% BF (or at least what I assume I would look like with that BF%). Why do you think you would look silly if you were 185 lbs?

I would look like a lollypop

I guess the thing is I'm not sure what BF % I want to be as I'm not sure what I would look like. I know you need to maintain some degree of BF and I don't really care if I'm super ripped. I'd just like to look reasonably well. Maybe have a little ab definition. I'm kind of built funny where I have no ass and really lean legs. Most of my weight is upperbody. I'm built like a snow cone.
