hey obz,
i was born in germany and my mom and i would really have a treat when she brought home fresh ground beef, not sure if it's a cultural thing or not because my american dad would get grossed out watching us. we would ball up some fresh hamburg, sprinkle some salt and pepper on it and go to town. i'm sure if i hadn't been exposed to this as a kid i would vomit too if i saw it. we've never so much as had a bellyache other than maybe eating too much. i'm 48 so most of this was in the 'old days' before they had strict regulation of food preparation, grinding only one type of meat per grinder, etc. for example, you would never want to eat raw ground beef if the grinder was just used for pork or chicken. now a days, the health dept really watches over the local supermarkets and i'm even more at ease about the contamination issue, companies are so liability concerned it isn't worth the risk for them to bend the rules, even employees could sue them for making them do something unsafe. ever watch them prepare meats at costco or sams where they are working behind glass so you can watch everything they do? they follow the rules to the 'T' and everything is very sanitary. it's been awhile since i've had any and just talking about it makes me want to run out to the grocery store. i'm sure you read the previous links to the urban legends or whatever you call it, that even makes me more comfortable with my 'strange' food craving. i can only say that i understand where you're coming from, if it doesn't gross you out then it's a very enjoyable treat and it's healthy to boot (not being cooked).
don.
ps. that was nonsense about not eating raw or cooked meat for a month apart. it wouldn't even matter if it was in the same meal. ever heard of a medium rare steak, cooked on the outside and raw (but warm, sometimes cold) in the middle? that's in one meal, the way i like them and i'm still kickin.
pss. the wife also gets grossed out when i do this, thinks i'm crazy but that's only because she almost get's sick just thinking about it. i can't even get her to try a tiny little bit but then again, it took 5 years before she could eat a medium rare steak.
