Well after my week long amazing vacation in Cancun my home got broken into and they trashed my home stole dvd's, tv, laptop, my guitar(which i cared about the most of the stolen items). Thank god i don't own jewelry not a big fan but if i did i would have gone medieval on them. I have to go to the police station tomorrow fill out paper work and all the junk. My question is you guys have any advice on situations like this my insurance is obviously going to take care of everything. Thanks in advance time for the gym and kill weight :shooter:

Where do you live?
Did you mention to anyone you were going away?
Next time have someone house sit for you and by all means get a cheapo survilance camera that you can monitor by the phone.

If I get my house I'll be doing all this.

depending on the insurance adjuster assigned to your case (if he/she wants to be a dick), you could possible come out to the good. you can have your stolen shit replaced with better shit.

sorry to hear about that though bro.

Advice? Don't live in a neighborhood with minorities.

Aside from that, put together a list of what was stolen. Your insurance company will need it order to pay you. And take pictures.

I had an attempted break in last summer. This from we believe my ex's brother - the only douchebag with a long list of BS and only our house was hit in the edition in the span of 10 years. Happened in broad daylight as soon as my wife left to drop me off lunch - and when my ex still thought i was in another state. Immediately called the police, filed a report, got adt installed and ordered a 4 camera security dvr system where the dvr is locked up tight and out of the way. Auto records on movement, night vision, etc. No problems since.

3 Months ago, the same scumbag got caught having a methlab in his attic. He is up the river for at least 20 years. Karma's a bitch, aint it.

I was joking, but...

I lived in a neighborhood for three years with no problems. And then three Mexican families moved into one rental. That week I had a sled, a snow shovel, and a bike stolen off my lawn.

I remember you mentioning that, it is a sad fact but it's true.
We were looking to buy a house and while the neighborhood and houses were beautiful we noticed something....there was not one white person there.

Don't get me wrong, we can live in a mixed where there isn't one dominant race but to live where ......well you know.

Nice, can you add more cameras to it?

As mentioned you can do a good diy quailty dvr camera system for $1000-1500. If you do keep in mind cable quality and dvr quality are just as important as camera quality.

FYI: Most people do not know many ins policies are fair market value policies. Do you have a closet full of $70 Polo shirts? Guess what? They are used and maybe worth $20 ea. What about guns? Say a new Glock .40 lists for $600 its worth $400 slightly used. But its 10 years old? Uh oh!

State Farm is one of few ins companies that offer replacement value policies and you have to ask for one specifically. Also, replacement value policies help for acts of God as well. Say you have a 10yo roof that gets clobbered by a hail storm. A replacement value policy doesn't pro-rate that 10yrs off a 30yr roof. SF put a $14000 roof on my house 2 yrs ago due to hail.

About the only place replacement value might not be needed is with electronics due to how much they have come down over the years. An example would be my 60" DLP TV I paid $2400 for back in 07. I bet it could be replaced for $1200 nowadays (just a guess).

Also, many of you rent apartments.....INSURE YOUR SHIT! Its only about $100/yr!

Shit one insurance adjuster the handled my claim when a car ran into my house said how could i have avoided this from happening.I said well mybe people can stop trying to turn that corner at 40 miles and hour when the speed limit is 15.(he really said that):coffee:

Not on mine, I payed about $300 through newegg (a swann unit). Others can have 8 or 12. You can pay allot more, as another suggested but the problem is that the resolution is normally not better. The problem lies in the fact that most are tied to the resolution of TV (480) and breaks that into 4 sections. I can blow it up to one screen and it still looks good though. You can also have access through the net with it on your phone or another pc. The night vision is outstanding. The newer ones have much better interfaces than mine - mine looks like it came off an atari 2600, but it still functions well.

Newegg.com - Video Monitoring Kits / All in One Systems

I have an lcd right beside the bigscreen in the livingroom so I can see whatevers going on or who is coming up to the driveway or front door with a glance. No surprise visits from the inlaws.

Thanks everyone I keep having the feeling its someone I know as far my insurance company it is State farm. My insurance agent has been good to me over the past years so hopefully he can put in a good word with whoever i get assigned to as far as paper work and payment stuff goes. The video camera DVR is one of the investments im looking into as we speak never again will this happen. I just wish I was their i would have pulled out my gun and blasted away. :shooter: Thanks and god bless.

8 dogs, people don't even walk into my yard to solicit....

Get the surveillance camera as soon as you replace your stuff, and get some extra security in your place. Thieves often come back and hit you up again once you replace all your stuff.

How did they break in the first time?

This is where I buy my CCTV stuff from. I'm not saying they're the best but they are in state and carry great inventory.

An example of cameras I use at my manufacturing business are:

Outdoor lit or poorly lit and distant:

CLDC-540DV - Bullet Security Cameras - PolarisUSA

Inside or outside lit or poorly lit:

CVF-540 - Bullet Security Cameras - PolarisUSA

Office ceiling lit or poorly lit:

VPD-550IR- Dome Security Cameras - PolarisUSA

I bought my 16 channel DVR elsewhere and it's average quality. At some point I'll replace it with something in the $1000-$1200 range.

Keep in mind I made the mistake of not buying this grade of equipment initially. I thought a 4 camera system for $600 was a great deal. Not.

You're in great shape with SF. Usually they say go buy what you need and cut you a check right there in the office if it's under $5K(?).

A few other tips the cop told me about my situation. The douche was very brazen, he was stalking the house. Went up to the front door and tried to only enter there. If they know what they are doing, the will face away from the door and back-kick the hinge side - this is the weakest past of the door since the screws do not go deep and it will crack the wood apart easily and they back-kick because that creates the most force. I had the boot prints to prove it. Replace the screws with much longer ones that will tie into the 2x4 deeper inside. He almost got in, the door jamb was split wide open but still stuck enough. Oh, and always utilize a good bolt lock.

When I got home from my job that day (with the wife still there - with a gun handy), I quickly got to work repairing the door jamb with clamps and glue and had to leave to door open while I babysat it. About 9:00pm I see 3 unknown cars at the end of my street pull up enough and stop at the end. One slowly comes towards my house and circles around the culdesac (I am at the end of it) and starts back. In the meantime, I run and get my baseball bat and walk to the end of my driveway waving. The car speeds up and leaves, the other 2 turn around where they were waiting and follow the other one out. Long story short, they thought it was just the missus there and banked on her getting freaked out by the smashed door (and hearing no alarm when the breakin occured) and leaving that night with the kids to a family/friends house. They didn't know I had my wife with my 9mm barretta and me with my bat waiting.

If you get an ADT-like service, make sure you pay for it and don't let it lapse. While the alarm will still work if set, he will smash it quickly and the thief will just drive down the street and wait 15 minutes to see if the cops arrive. If no police, they go back and ransack the place. No payment, no call. They know this.

Place your cameras wisely. On both ends of my house, I have no windows, thankfully. Just on the front and back. I placed 1 at the front door facing the door, front lawn and front window. Placed another viewing the street and driveway. Placed the two others in the middle of the house in the back facing opposite directions (viewing the windows) to catch anyone walking around to the backside. The adt system has glass breakage detectors, just in case.

If your not a felon and don't live in a nazi state, get a gun and learn how to use it well at the range. I bide my time for one day in happily cleaning up brain matter and blood off my rugs.

^^^^Since alarms were mentioned......many people don't know ADT and Honeywell systems can be serviced and monitored through other monitoring companies for less money per month.

Once your contract expires contact a local alarm guy and tell him what you have. They need to access the system before ADT knows what you're doing because ADT can lock you out remotely. Once the local guy does his thing call ADT and cancel.

ADT is now SOL.

^^^ Oh thats right, good point. I had another company install the stuff. All ADT brand. I forget who monitors it though, I don't think it's adt actually. I shopped around and did the homework and got the best price/service much lower than the actual ADT company.

I wanted the keypad in a specific location and the tech said it couldn't be done. I did 75% of the grunt work and proved him wrong. For helping him, he gave me some extra long cables for my cameras that I needed and some other stuff. I got goodies and had the pad where I wanted it. win win. Just know the layout of your house, because the install tech will not.

Many also require you having an actual landline - and one that has calling to outside area codes for long distance. If you do not use your landline (especially for LD calls), they have an option to have LD without charge unless you use it. Most Voip services will not work, from what I have been told.
