Add strength to speed not endurance, THANK YOU DD. It at least works for the lower body.; ) But add strength to slow = less slow... not speed. Add endurance to slow and you MIGHT get a cross country runner but not a 100 meter runner, no way. Speed is natural. On the flip side, can you bulk up a marathon runner and make him slower, YES. Now the bottom line is.. natural speed doesn't come from the weight room.

What about boxers and the upper body??? Strength or endurance as it relates to God given speed? Have fun with that one but leave skill out of it we'll assume the skill is there. : )

Final $0.02c on this. in martial arts alot of us believe that speed comes from not force but relaxation.. relaxing into the mechanic.. as does the power to jump. It iis there and godgiven.. and it's only thought holding us back. Let go and be there and maintain focus on relaxing through and into every moment .

Glad that got said because at the end of the day, that's all i have:).

Eh. I am thinking about kinetic energy that is actually building up in martial arts. Its 'relaxing' but in essense, anyone could call it the latter.

I was sitting down with a few buddies the other night and me and my one friend argued that "real world strength" cannot be gained by training in the gym (deadlifts/squats not included). IE a bodybuilder on the first day of the job would most likely not be able to keep up with drywallers or framers for the first month or so, all other things equal. But i didnt have any solid evidence to back it up other than my own experience.

Awhile (2+ years) back i posted this thread http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/training/51824-useless-gym-strength-job-site.html. Read it to see my experience with this issue. i didnt really get a specific explanation to this phenomenon. Is there even a reason why this difference exists?

Anyone know?

Here's the thing. Those framers have been doing that work for years. It's like the framer going to the gym and thinking he will lift the same as the lifter. It's not going to happen because each party has not practiced the skills required for each respective activity.

However, the difference is that intensity used while lifting weights will lead to hypertrophy and improved intramuscular coordination. Once the person gets better at dealing with the intermuscular coordination associated with a new activity, they will be stronger/better because their potential for force output is higher due to the aforementioned differences.

Also, I've worked physical jobs. I can tell you right now that after improving my strength in the gym I would wipe the floor with a lot of experienced people in terms of physical prowess for a given physical activity. That original statement is somewhat of a fallacy in my opinion.

That's where it becomes zen Akira. Sometimes it requires a little more focus to relax and keep doing it with increasing stressors than one might initially aniticipate or 've known before.. fun though :thumb: .. sometimes it's also easy to mistake that for a need for force .. real easy at times. . Watch that one;). ( ooh.. and since it's you, and relationship peace how to chit chat has been a continuing theme between us.. ..)
