WASHINGTON (AP) - Cindy Sheehan, the California woman who has used her son's death in Iraq to spur the anti-war movement, was arrested Monday while protesting outside the White House.

Sheehan and several dozen other protesters sat down on the sidewalk after marching along the pedestrian walkway on Pennsylvania Avenue. Police warned them three times that they were breaking the law by failing to move along, then began making arrests.

Sheehan, 48, was the first taken into custody. She stood up and was handcuffed, then led to a police vehicle while protesters chanted, "The whole world is watching."

Others who were arrested also cooperated with police. Sgt. Scott Fear, spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, said they would be charged with demonstrating without a permit, which is a misdemeanor.

Park Police Sgt. L.J. McNally said Sheehan and the others would be taken to a processing center where they would be fingerprinted and photographed, then given a ticket and released. The process would take several hours, he said.

Sheehan's 24-year-old son, Casey, was killed in an ambush in Sadr City, Iraq, last year. She attracted worldwide attention last month with her 26-day vigil outside President Bush's Texas ranch.

Sheehan was among several hundred demonstrators who marched around the White House on Monday and then stopped in front and began singing and chanting "Stop the war now!" Organizers had said some planned to be arrested.

The demonstration is part of a broader anti-war effort on Capitol Hill organized by United for Peace and Justice, an umbrella group. Representatives from anti-war groups were meeting Monday with members of Congress to urge them to work to end the war and bring home the troops.

The protest following a massive demonstration Saturday on the National Mall that drew a crowd of 100,000 or more, the largest such gathering in the capital since the war began in March 2003.

On Sunday, a rally supporting the war drew roughly 500 participants. Speakers included veterans of World War II and the war in Iraq, as well as family members of soldiers killed in Iraq.

"I would like to say to Cindy Sheehan and her supporters don't be a group of unthinking lemmings. It's not pretty," said Mitzy Kenny of Ridgeley, W.Va., whose husband died in Iraq last year. The anti-war demonstrations "can affect the war in a really negative way. It gives the enemy hope."

She wants to extend her 15 minutes of fame. And she'll use her son's body to do it.

Why photographed and fingerprinted for a ticket? Is this our governments way of keeping track of dissenters? If I get a speeding ticket I get the ticket, they don't take my picture and fingerprints.

It's likey that the crime was greater than a traffic ticket, but will be knocked down. She still has to be booked for the crime that she committed though.

But if it makes you feel better:

I dont know but someone barreling down the road at 15 miles over the speed limit is going to do more damage to other people than a couple little women sitting on a sidewalk. Doesn't seem as severe a crime to warrant even wasting the ink for fingerprints let alone pictures.:hmmm:

I think it's because she had to be forceably restrained. If you had a speeding ticket for 15 MPH over the speed limit and became beligerant and confrontational with the officer and wouldn't back down, you'd likely end up down at the station with a speeding ticket and some sort of resisting violation. If she had just left when she was warned the first few times, she wouldn't be getting fingerprinted (which is a normal part of being taken to the station).

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats
as a Unifying Cause -
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Man, there is just something about this woman that i do not like.

But I believe in her right to be as much of an A-hole as she likes, such is life.

I just can't figure out why she's such a thorn. Just ignore her. Why's she such a sore spot? Change the channel if it bothers you. I sort of agree with Dale on this one.

It's a great, quick-read that describes the history of oil in the U.S. and the entire world.

I think Bush should have her executed for being a terrorist! USA! USA! USA! USA!

I must ask what this has to do with Cindy Sheehan being an ass. Her son got killed in Iraq. We get that. The president met with her after he was killed. Grieve and go on with your life. Set up a memorial in his name if you wish. He was a good man and I salute him for standing up for his country and what he believed in!

Well, at least that anti-war protest drew a low estimate of 100,000 people. . .yet the wingnut demonstration in Washington the next day drew about 400 . . .

And the Associated Press story in one local paper used the headline about "hundreds" of people marching to "support our troops" and wrote the lead about the puny little demonstration - as if 400 in Washington is such a newsworthy event. I can remember demonstrations of over 50,000 that the national media ignored, but the wingnut media loyally makes sure their 400 gets its headline status. . .

BTW, with the high gas prices and everyone still using oil like there is no tomorrow, it's obvious we willl not be deprived of our SUV's and other habits unless we are forced to.

Serj Tankian said it best:

We fought your wars with all our hearts
You've sent us back in body parts
You took our wills with the truth you stole
We offer prayers for your long lost soul

The remainder is an unjustifiable, egotistical power struggle
At the expense of the American dream, of the American dream
Of the American

We don't give a damn about your world
With all your global profits
And all your jeweled pearls
We don't give a damn about your world

We don't give a f**k about your world
With all your global profits
And all your jeweled pearls
We don't give a f**k about your world

There is no flag that is large enough
To hide the shame of a man in cuffs
You switched the signs, then you closed our blinds
