UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk (Pictures) has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite following his title defense July 7 in Sacramento, Calif, the state's athletic commission revealed Thursday. Sherk scored a dominating five-round decision win over Brazilian Hermes Franca (Pictures), whom the CSAC also said tested positive for the banned substance Drostanolone.

After testing both "A" and "B" samples of the urine specimen provided by Sherk the day before the fight, the UFC champion's Nandrolone level was certified by the Director of Science and Technology at the lab conducting the tests at 12 ng/ml, two times higher than the threshold allowed by the CSAC, said the state regulatory body.

The Minnesotan lightweight has been fined $2,500 and suspended 365 days from the date of the fight, including an additional 10 days that would need be served if Sherk reapplied for a license to fight in the Golden State.

Calls to Sherk and his trainer Greg Nelson were not immediately returned.

Franca was also fined $2,500 -- the maximum fine the CSAC can levy -- and suspended through July 5, 2008. The Brazilian told MMAweekly.com that he had used a "banned substance" prior to the fight.

"I offer only an explanation and not an excuse," Franca said. "I made a decision during a difficult time in my training for the fight that I regret."

Saying an injured ankle prompted him to look for ways to "accelerate the healing process" Franca said he made the "shortsighted" choice to use a banned substance. "Under the pressure of literally not being able to pay next months bills I made a choice," he told MMAweekly. "I had to fight and did whatever I could to do so."

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (Anderson Silva' class='LinkSilver'>Pictures) and Nathan Marquardt (Pictures), participants in July 7's other title fight in Sacramento, Calif., were both cleared for any banned substances.

This news comes on the heels of a CSAC report that revealed 28 violations, including nine for steroids, of its anti-doping policy from March 31, 2007 through July 6, 2007. Seventeen of the 28 violators were fighters in mixed martial arts contests.

I say kill the sanctions and let them all juice. Not because I want every fighter to use gear, but because not all franchises in different countries are required to test so some fighters are used to fighting juiced. To remove that from them puts them at a distinct disadvantage to a fighter that is always fighting natural. We already know that as long as a person is cautious about how he juices he'll come out a healthier fighter so fuck it ... let 'em all hit the sauce.

i agree. they all have to make weight anyway so why not just let them do it. if they want to and it is legal, let them do it under supervision and call it good

I think Sherk will probably get stripped of his belt.

On top of the bad publicity of having one of their belt-holders testing positive, his 1-year suspension will not be good for business, especially considering how long it took him to defend his title in the first place.

1 fight every 2 years ain't gonna cut it.

I did think it was a LONG time since his last fight. But to be stripped of the belt? Why? The asshole he fought tested positive too, so Id say it was miraculously fair.

Aside from the rules of the UFC and of the State Athletic Commission, it's still illegal IN THIS COUNTRY to be on it without a perscription.

He's violated a federal law, end of story.

Exactly. When we have these discussions about "should Barry's record stand" or "should Sherk be stripped of his title?" We overlook one simple fact that steroids aren't just an unfair advantage and banned from most sports, they are illegal. Period.

Sherk should and probably will be stripped of his title (Timmay didn't get to keep his) and both he and Franca should be suspended.

Sherk is appealing it, 12ng/ml isnt that much compared to Gracie who had 50ng/ml.

Terrific. Well, I kinda hope they dont take his belt away and just give him what the article states and be done with it.

Why did they test all of them after the fights?
They take the samples at weigh in. It takes a few days to get the test results in and confirmed from the second sample.

I assume theyre random tests right? I mean, if these idiots just walked right into that then thats pretty clumsy. Then again, maybe they thought small doses wouldnt be detected? I dont know, why take that chance.

Bone, thats rampage in your banner right? What event is that, is it some sort of highlight night?

Not random at all. It's a mandatory part of the qualification process. You have to make weight and be of sound health, and you need to test drug free. Every fighter is required to provide enough piss for not just one but two urine samples at every weigh-in ... fresh from the tap of course as observed by a state athletic commission appointed pecker checker.

That is Rampage. I'll be downloading the show from FCZ prolly.

Is it across the board now? I remember a year or two ago, it was only manditory testing for title fights, and non-title fighters were tested at random.

Isn't Nandralone a drug that takes a shit long time to get out of the system. Why is he so fucking retarded?

I thought so too, but the testing is being done across the board lately. Prolly set by each SAC.

Actually it depends on the state's athletic commission. There were no tests for the UFC 70 in Manchester and Texas is a state that doesn't require testing either.

Wiki said:
Urine analysis as a method of detecting nandrolone abuse has recently become somewhat controversial, following studies by the University of Aberdeen showing that the metabolite product can also show up in urine in quantities above the upper limit from a combination of high-protein diets utilising the legal nutritional supplement creatine and hard cardiovascular exercise. The reason for this unexpected result has not been determined. Another possible (though unlikely) reason for a false positive result is the consumption of beef from cattle treated with steroids including nandrolone (used in overturning the verdict against the bobsleigh racer, Lenny Paul). Heavy consumption of the essential amino acid lysine (as indicated in the treatment of cold sores) has also shown false positives in some and was cited by American Shotputter C.J. Hunter as the reason for his positive test. A final possible cause of incorrect urine test results is the presence of metabolites from other anabolic steroids. As a result of the numerous overturned verdicts, the testing procedure was reviewed by UK Sport [1] in 2000.

FYI.
