When it comes to recovery, what difference is there between actual sleep (being unconscious) and bodily rest (eg sitting down watching TV)?
Your body is not moving much in either - so is simply being still allowing your muscles to recover? Or do you need to actually sleep to fully benefit from the inactivity?

I'm under the impression that we sleep largely for the benefit of the brain, whereas simple rest is adequate for your actual body. How wrong am I?

When you are asleep, you go into a deep sleep called REM! THat is where growth and recover benefit from.
Sleep apnea is when you body does not go into REM and you feel sleepy all day.

Edit...If I had taken the time to read Katie's article, it explains this well!

Great link :)
