Soda, the fizzy nail in your coffin
Every glass of soda you drink daily increases your risk of death by 5 percent. Chinese epidemiologists from Huazhong University were able to calculate this on the basis of American data. Do you want to live longer? Replace soda with water, tea or coffee. Without sugar.

The researchers used data from some 30,000 adult Americans, collected in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2014.The Americans had shared what they drank and ate on a daily basis. In 2015, the Chinese then looked at which of the study participants were still alive. The researchers were able to follow the average study participant for eight years.
Results
Each daily glass of sugar-sweetened soda increased the risk of death by 5 percent. This was probably mainly because soft drinks increased the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease.

Replacing regular soft drinks with coffee and tea without sugar or plain water reduced the risk of death. This also applied to the replacement of soft drinks with sugars by soft drinks with low-calorie sweeteners.
