Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) was killed

I think what happened is a tragedy, the world has lost a great person, a star, an educator, an animal lover, a conservationist...and I was sad about it yesterday and today (yes I am being serious).

I liked Steve and his shows, his passion and energy were genuine and he made a difference on this planet, unlike most people. Yes, he flirted with danger and it was bound to happen, however I would have rather heard that he died from a croc biting his head off. The way in which he died should not have happened and it is a very rare occurence to get killed by a sting ray.

Rest in peace Crocodile Man! :)

that still sucks bad though dam. if any of u have ever actually caught a sting ray with a fishing pole u would know how strong they actually are
and if u had there tail inserted into your heart the whiplash would be truly devastating thats horrible the one i caught was only about 2.5-3ft diameter and from my understanding he was riding this thing or somthing like that so it was truly powerful. that is horrible
 
I have heard heaps about him over here because of his death. He should have stuck to croc wrestling and left the stingrays alone.

Stingrays are mostly docile, chances of being killed by one are about the same as walking through the Peruvian jungle and having a sloth fall dead from a tree and break your neck.

Yeah, I swam with them at this tourist place called "Stingray City" off Grand Cayman Island. It's a big sandy flat, about 3' deep. I was on a boat with about 30 people. The boat pulls up and the Captain puts it in neuteral and revs the engine 4 or 5 times. They start swimming toward the boat like ants coming to a picnic. You jump in the water with chunks of conch meat in your hand and the swim by and eat it out of your hand. They are very graceful and tranquil to watch. One guy must have wiped the conch meat on his gut when he jumped in because this big ray gave hime a hickey the size of coffe cup right on his fat gut:laugh:

I bet this little incident will put a damper on that business for a while.

He was a great guy that made learning about animals fun and exciting for kids and adults. A great conservationalist as well. RIP Stevie.
 
Man, I surely thought he would be eaten by crocks or sniped by a cobra but a stingray? That sucks. Funny guy, I miss his shows.

I wondered if the Stingray City would suffer from this incident but aparently the operators of the resort don't seem to think it will.

Wouldn't it be funny(ironic) if like 20 people on a tour got shot to the heart after this?
 
Apparently the incident was caught on tape. They weren't doing anything to aggrivate the stingray, it just go startled.

Story goes that Steve pulled the barb out of his own chest.

Steve said a few years ago if he ever dies on film that he wants it to be shown.
 
did you know that on average ONE person a year dies froma stingray attack!!
 
The venom from the sting ray barb is known to cause headache, nausea, and arrythmia. I guess that makes it as likely to cause death as reading one of Foreman's posts...
