So, I have been getting very frustrated this last year or so. Ever since prices started going up for supplements due to taxation etc. There are more and more companies now offering these "Whey protein blend" formulas. Matrix (supplement centre brand), Olympus Health, Iron Science, to name but a few.
What's bothering me is that the formulas in these "protein blends" are "proprietary" formulas. They all seem to contain some wpc, milk protein and most importantly Soy protein. The problem is that they don't/won't tell you how much of each is in the mix!
Now this seemed very dodgy to me, so I have contacted 2 of the companies in question and asked for a breakdown. Surprise surprise, they would not provide one. One company has never replied to numerous request's, and the other just keep saying "it's a proprietary blend so we don't have to"! So clearly they have something to hide, no?
Now I have no problem with Soy Protein per se, however I would prefer not to use it. The problem I have is when they call a product "Whey" Matrix, but actually give you a product mostly made up of the much much cheaper Soy isolate. Then chuck in a splash of wpc and milk protein.
When confronted with this accusation, they just either ignore you or state that proprietary crap. Now proprietary ingredients were originally designed to protect a company's secret formula, but this surely can't be applicable to a protein blend?! There's no big secret in a protein blend, apart from keeping us, the customer, in the dark about what they are really putting in there!
I am trying to start a campaign to get supplement companies to abandon this practice of hiding behind proprietary formulas and be more transparent and honest about thier products. If it's a good quality product, they shouldn't need to hide behind a proprietary blend. They should be proud to state how much quality ingredients are in their products! I guarantee that these blends contain almost no quality whey protein, and loads of cheap Soy protein.
The issue is a moral one. Don't make us think it's a Whey product, when in fact it's a Soy product. Call it Soy Matrix, with added Whey!! It's about honesty and integrity, but we are being misled.
For everyone has has been bothered to read this far, here is the message....
.....Your better off in the long run paying a bit more for a quality honest product, rather than spending money on these deceptive proprietary blends that are everywhere now.
Can I get a bit of support for this so we can try to make a bit of a difference and get companies to be more transparent? Try to get them to focus a bit more on the quality for the customer, rather than just the profit margins?
Regards,
Santoro
