ive been reading in alot of unbiased sites that say that 1 grm of protein is absolute most u need to gain muscle and that 1 grm per lean lb body mass so if u weighed 200lbs at 10percent bodyfat u would only need 180 grms protein. ne amount of protein over this would go to waste and gaining muscle has alot more to do with carbs. i knew in order to gain muscle u had to up ure carbs alot but i always thopuhgt the more protein the better interested to see how u guys/gals think about this.

Nothing goes to waste if you use it :)

It is more complicated then that, but as a nutrition major I was taught that athletes that put serious stress on their bodies could benifit from up to 2 grams/lb bw. If you have enough energy from carbohydrates (CHO) and fats (Lipids) then your protein needs won't be as high as otherwise, because your body won't need to use any protein for energy.

I agree with Pirate but would add that if your protein consumption is high drink lots of water to assist your kidneys in breaking down the protein.

thnx guys i personally feel like im strongest when i up my carbs and when my protein is around 1 to 1.5 grms protein per day thats why i was wondering.

You cant use more than you need. I would not take my protein advice from mens health mag, word of mouth in the gym or the local counter jockey at GNC. I would like to see some results of REAL studies showing that 2g per Lb will result in more good than bad. Ohh and runners and other endurance athalets use MORE than body builders.

according to what data ? that is laughable, a high protein intake has no effect on athletic performance...

personally I use 1-1.5 grams of protein per lb of LBM not total bodyweight...

Endurance athletes "burn" more protein.

of course they burn more as their bodies are almost always in a catabolic state. but to say that the protein requirments of an endurance athlete are greater than that of a bodybuilder is not correct. blanket statements like that can not be made.
