I'm about 9 weeks out, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to get a little bigger. I'm 170lbs and I'd like to be around 190lbs, can that be done in the alotted time?

-Travis.

Could it be done sure I guess.

Would it impact your performance, absolutely.

you would be lucky to gain 20lbs in a year.

Why do you need to gain so much weight?

I guess I dont need to, as I move up in ranks though the guys get bigger and bigger. I'm trying to keep up as much as possible, have less than a 10-15lb gap between us. But some of these guys I'm fighting are pretty big I'd say 200+lbs and it's mostly lean muscle.

It depends, for competition (state/county sponsored) there is. For our gym we don't have enough competitors so we don't do weight classes.

Bulk in the off season, you'd do better practicing technique, and maintaining your general fitness level right now.

best advice there. i use to do BJJ competitions, and help start a MMA team when I was in the military. you really do not want to "bulk" strength training yes. you want to learn how to cut weight properly. once you get into competions the higher up you go in weight your still going to be facing guys WAY bigger than you, because they cut down to the weight your trying to come in at. so a lot of them cut about 15 pounds in water weight and not eating the night before and then eat and hydrate and put it all back on. so don't worry about moving up in weight, strength train and technique!!!!! 9 weeks out you should just be fine tuning your technique with some SERIOUS "rolling"

good luck!

Is it BJJ or MMA? I don't understand, are you doing two tournaments? BJJ and MMA are two different sports.

20 lbs in 9 weeks is unrealistic. Your body won't be able to accommodate to the weight well enough if you want to compete. My advice is to get as strong and well conditioned at your current weight. IMO, the best you could do is to become very efficient with the way your body currently is. A very slow bulk over the next 9 weeks isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't put on too much weight.

Technique technique technique and conditioning, if the other guy gets tired before you, you are set to win. Strength is useless if you can't maintain it.

Good luck getting more than about 1-2 pounds of muscle on your frame in that time unless you are totally new to resistance training. Adding a substantial amount of muscle mass takes years.

Very good points all around, thanks.

fufu: I do both MMA and BJJ, but this tournament is strictly MMA, most of these guys who I fight are 2nd-3rd degree blackbelts in TKD so it's more about endurance for this one. The BJJ however I feel I'd do better with a few extra pounds on my frame because like CORUM said these guys cut 15+lbs just to make a lower weight class.

I'll work on technique then, and this summer is when I'll do my bulk since I don't compete much over the summer break. Thanks all around.

By the way CowPimp, your sig made me laugh so hard :roflmao:

Well, good thing for you, TKD specialists generally won't cut as much weight compared to someone with a wrestling background.
Good luck.

Thanks, training is going well.
I went Water Sking with some mates of mine, I'm sore all over. Anyone ever tried working water sports in to a workout routine? lol.

it really depends on the quality of weight u want to put on I still think 20lbs is unrealistic but if u are just looking weight to throw around in the clinch u could probably put 10lbs on if u up calories and get a good weight gainer it just won't be muscle weight

20lb in 9 weeks would mostly be fat anyways. It's just impossible to put on that much mass

i like what is being said here, i dont know how old you are, but ive wreslted along time, kick boxed for four years and trained in MMA for four years iv had 5 fights, going pro soon, i walk around between 210-230 and cut to 185 for fights, i did want to build some muscle to stay strong so i ususally take 3 months out ot the year to get to 230 and lift and eat my ass off, and just really work on my technique, but since your limited on time defenatley work technique thats what it will all come down to, when your have 45 seconds in the third round and its your last, youve had your face punced and kicked, when your tired thats when your muscle memory kits in and thing come to your naturally, with all of our fighters we have we dont send them in the ring rested we send them in seconds after jump roping, and hitting mits till you cant breath cause your tired but more excited, and nervous :) THAT MY FRIEND IS WHEN TECHNIQUE COMES IN!

20lbs of muscle? Possible but not likely...not naturally anyway : )

What weight class are you entering? 170 would be welterweight (UFC anyway)...I guess you don't want to be in the same weight class as GSP : )
