If you have to grab something to eat a fast food place, is a grilled chicken sandwich safe from trans fat? Just wondering if the trans fat in fast food is a by-product of the deep frying process (meaning it would be in fries and breaded chicken patties) or if it ends up in all fast food.

Mostly in deep fried stuff and baked goods. I think a grilled chicken breast is relatively safe IF it is a real chicken breast and not a grilled chicken patty comprised of various unidentified chicken parts.

If I'm not mistaken you can actually create transfats by cooking oils (heating them) while cooking food in oil.

i'm not clear on which oils, but yeah. Jodi or Trouble or maybe even Emma-Leigh may know more about that. I'll look it up for ya tomorrow - bed time for me now. Running at 430 am!

Anything polyunsaturated can go rancid. Each oil has it's own smoke point and the polys have a much lower smoke point than mono's. That's why cooking with olive oil is a better choice. Olive oil is monounsaturated.

Agrees with Jodi but we people aren't answering the question at hand. "If you have to grab something to eat a fast food place, is a grilled chicken sandwich safe from trans fat"

The answer without alot of tech talk is yea your best choice is "grilled" whereby oils are not required for cooking. To make that fast food "grilled" sandwich even healthier, be sure to ask the counter person to hold the glob of mayo that these places like to slop on there. Remove part of the bun so you're not eating all that crappy white bread and ask them for one of their low fat salad dressings (which you will pay extra for) and put a "little" of that on there for flavor.
