2 hours and 42 min. I saw it tonight. Pretty good, but not fantanstic IMO.

What about me?
I normally love these kinds of films.
But, in this case I will probably wait for the DvD???s to come out and get around to watching it on one of those days when I???m home sick in bed and need to pass the time to get better.
From what I gather this film is lacking in many aspects. It does not make even an attempt to be accurate to Homer???s Iliad. There are no Greek or Trojan God???s involved at all. Which is an interesting notion since it parallels some of what is going on today with the de-romanticization of myths and secularization of beliefs etc. So a complete dimension of belief and spirituality central to the original story and people is stripped clean as if it never existed. Instead the director appears to be selling gore and action. Not a bad formula in today???s environment and new wave of warriors currently playing shoot em up in the video parlors and gameboys at home. In keeping with the pattern of secularization this rendition makes it hard to find any clear good vs. bad so it???s hard for many individuals who would other wise be ripe and ready from today???s current events to personally choose a preferred hero/villain to righteously get in to. We are asked instead to just sit back and enjoy action and gore and some pretty good effects as well as a few pretty bodies as the only compelling form of entertainment. Lack of dimension is probably going to be my big complaint. There may however be a sort of unintended entertainment in the fact that Brad Pitts is probably more ???pretty??? than the most beautiful woman of the world; Helen of Troy (Diane Kruger ??). And that is perhaps the other problem ??? except for a minor part by Peter O'Toole there are no truly world class actors in this film. It will never be the juggernaut that Homer???s epic story has been all through the ages. Sorry kids, Pitts(as a vain Achilles) is in the script to steal your lunch money and brand himself into your hearts and hormones as the new idyllic standard for future milk runs. Face it you are being programmed to contribute a certain specific percentage of your allowances over the next 5-10 years to pay homage to the directors and producer???s will. With few emerging alternative actors to chose from and the need for the human psyche to be perpetually stimulated and titillated with more and more action you don???t really have much choice in this matter. You are being routinely conditioned to be hooked on junk brain food.
Apart from ignoring the role of the mythological gods though this is suppose to be a good historical rendering with good detail. There are clearly the director???s own philosophical messages about war intertwined in this film. So the director has removed the influence of the morality and personality of the Greek/Trojan gods and instead made himself a god and forced us to consume his message. But, few will notice this covert manipulation of audiences minds and beliefs since it has been going on for decades in the national TV offerings and movies anyway; and even longer in the literary works. People no longer are even consciously aware of the background music that is used to compel them emotionally from scene to scene. One thing is for certain though. We will all know the end and know when to clap (for one reason or another).
Bottom line: Buy your ticket, eat your popcorn and try to figure out what makes Helen so worth spilling all that blood over; then burp and go home.

every movie ive seen of The Illiad or The Oddysey
Their Gods were always involved

b/c i think it would be stupid with brad pitt

Why should we choose sides in this story? Not one character showed a redeeming quality that made me want him to win.
It seemed to me it was all about Brad. You are also right regarding the directors/producers mindset interwoven in the film.
Even so, I will probably see it again. I thought the actors who played Agememnon and his brother were superb. They really caught the ancient kings role down to a T.

I would see it again, however I wouldn't pay for it. OceanDude you should be a movie critic. Good Post. Dude, do you think they should have had a CGI apollo/or some all powerful voice in there advising kings/princes on there decisions?

It was a really good movie but I think I could go without seeing scrawny orlando bloom drenched in oil. Good actor but I just don't want to see some things.
I thought the fact that the gods had no direct role made the movie more realistic, I mean have many times do gods directly strike people down in real life? They addressed how much the gods affected the lives and decisions of the people by showing how Priam listened to his priest and omens more than hector the smartest warrior they had. Although I thought the story should have stayed closer to the original I enjoyed this new telling and thought Eric Bana made a wonderful Hector with a lot of emotion. All in all it was a great movie, but not the best epic I have ever seen.

I personaly do not care about anything more than whether or not I was entertained. Im not going to let anything like whether or not some movie was true to this or that spoil my enjoyment of it any more than Im going to let a cover song that was played with a slightly different solo get in the way of liking it. If it was bad, it was bad overall. If its good, its good. I care about the end product, Im not one for splitting hairs.
But thats just me. Two people in the same room will both have a different perspective of the same view of the room. This movie entertained me and I will buy it when it comes out on DVD.

o okay so it's almost as bad as spokane
it may be worse, I was living in san diego, but the navy moved me up here while we are in overall. The only good thing to do here is mountain bike or snowboard. Most of the clubs suck, the girls are a little larger than average, and it is an hr away from seattle. But hey whose complaining.
lol, yea I think from san diego to anywhere would be a big step down, especially with the girls. my brother used to be down there. now he is in pensacola doing flight training.
