Trump fires FBI Director James Comey

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey Tuesday, saying it was necessary to restore "public trust and confidence" in the nation's top law enforcement agency following several tumultuous months.

"The FBI is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions, and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement," Trump said in a statement.

The White House said the search for a new FBI director was beginning immediately. The White House made the stunning announcement shortly after the FBI corrected a sentence in Comey's sworn testimony on Capitol Hill last week. Comey told lawmakers that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, had sent "hundreds and thousands" of emails to her husband's laptop, including some with classified information.

On Tuesday, the FBI said in a two-page letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee that only "a small number" of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices. Most of the email chains on the laptop containing classified information were not the result of forwarding, the FBI said.

Comey, 56, was nominated by President Barack Obama for the FBI post in 2013 to a 10-year term. Praised for his independence and integrity, Comey has spent three decades in law enforcement and has been no stranger to controversy.

My thought was that he waited for it to be proven that there was no Russian collusion to his Administration.

Was it the day before that Clapper came out and publicized that there was no found evidence to suggest that there was any link between Russia and Trump.

If Trump fired Comey before that evidence, then it would have looked like he did it to hide evidence. Meanwhile even though this evidence came out, now these Politicians are demanding an Investigation.

I for one am all for an investigation. And when they find out even more then we already know that the CIA and FBI were involved in this...these people don't need to be fired..they need to go to Prison. Like the rest of us would.

On another note, the thing that is blowing my mind is that people are wrongfully assuming that just bc Comey left, the investigation will end. Which is not true. Even this new temporary acting Director stated that the investigation will continue. Also he said that the FBI did "not" need additional funds to continue the investigation, whereas Comey said that they did.

Either way these Democrats are now showing their hypocrisy. So many of them wanted Comey's head and said he was not fit for the job and now they are attacking and blaming Trump and acting like this is some major scandal.

Mind you, I am neither Dem or Republican..but many of these people are simply Hypocrites that have no place in politics: Maxine Waters, Pelosi, Paul Ryan, McCain...I'd like to see all of them removed as well.

For sure release them. I thought some of his taxes already got released and showed he paid a much higher rate then Obama or Clinton even who were yelling foul.

The fact of the matter is, that some of these Americans have lost their mind. Even if Trump does something right, they won't give him credit and they will attack him no matter what, even if it is delusional. For example see Maxine Waters. Anything she says is usually contradicted and spun. She has no place in Politics, let alone anywhere but a Psych unit probably.

I mean you see this huge political division and these Democrats and Republicans both protect their candidates when they do wrong. Which is not adequate. I think voters need to look at their own hypocrisy and biases. If you can't put that aside and be rationale...then you as well are part of the problem.

I like Trump, not everything he has done for sure. And I can't stand Sessions attacks on MJ. I dont use it, but MJ or AAS being illegal is disgraceful. I can't support all of that guys agenda at all..but I do think Comey has committed perjury, obstruction of justice and various other crimes in his duties.

Being fired was the least of what should have happened. He deserves Prison. He was the lead in Prosecuting Martha Stewart for obstruction of justice and lying..and he is 10x worse then her.

"As with any counterintelligence investigation, this will also include an assessment of whether any crimes were committed."

Then we can look at the investigations run by The House Intelligence Committee, The House Judiciary Committee, The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, The Senate Intelligence Committee, The Senate Judiciary, The Senate Armed Services Committee, The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, The GAO, and The Pentagon...they are all investigating the 2016 Presidential election and the Russia allegations and let's not forget the grand juries (two of them) that have convened in the interest of Trump and violations of RICO. That's a criminal investigation.

The acting director Andrew McCabe is a Trump mole and apologist. He's a plant. He made an improper visit to the White House on February 15th and in a five minute session with Reince Priebus he provided information compromising aspects of the FBI investigation into the collusion of the Trumpies with the Russkies. He's going to scuttle the investigation until another stooge is placed.

I'm still at a loss why Trump received so many votes. He's a con-man (ask the 7000 victims of Trump U) who was to 'drain the swamp...the Mexico wall funded by the Mexicans is brainless bc Mexico is a stalwart longtime ALLY of the US, deporting undocumented immigrants--some 12 million--will waste billions of dollars and the UIs contribute more to society than any Red Stater...plus he wanted to jail his opponent--HRC, and destroy the apparatus of a representative government.
