USA Eliminated

I get soccer fans riled up when I say this, but soccer is the WORST thing to happen to American sports. Kids play it until they are 12 and then never play it again. In the meantime, it limits them in playing basketball, baseball or football.

I coach youth basketball, and anytime a kid tells me he is also playing soccer, I immediatly assume he will miss half the practices and 1/4 of the games.

I hate soccer.

I can see what you are saying, but I thought the point of getting kids involved in sports is to teach them the value of teamwork, working within a system of rules, and getting them active. Since when is the purpose of youth sports programs to groom kids for professional sports careers?

That said, I wouldn't let my kids play soccer if I had any. I'd want my kids of play sports where padding and equipment are involved instead of just running around chasing a ball. :)

The sports junkie in me has been enjoying watching the World Cup games though. I want to see England win so we can see the rioters burn England to the ground. :D Once the World Cup is over, I'll go back to not giving two shits about soccer.

Yeah, I remember the kicker from Georgia Kevin Butler was a STUD soccer player. Could have been a star, but chose to kick in the NFL. Chose to be a place-kicker in the NFL over a star in soccer...that's says alot about the state of soccer in the US.

My cousin is major into soccer. He's got tons and tons of Div 1 offers already. He was named the #1 player in Dallas div play, and in Texas. He's in the JR. Olympics and all that. He's going into his SR year and he's already an allstar. I asked him why he quit football ( cause he was pretty talented at that too ) and he told me it was to rough on him.

all i'll say to this is that you know less than most , why even post on a soccer thread if u know nothing about it??

You have to be either joking or are totally clueless.
And I posted because I saw you were the last to post at the time and figured there'd be something funny going on in the thread - because coherency and you don't exactly go hand in hand.

You my friend are arguing a mute point. You are comparing one shit team from a country that doesn't care to another shit team from a country that doesn't care. And all of the per person things in the world don't really make up for the fact that football/soccer, call it what you will, is not a mainstream professional sport in Australia/America. Hence, both national teams are made up at the last minute and thrown up against nations who are having international matches all the time. Hell - Australia has only had their coach for four (4) months! The previous coach was caretaker coach, the previous coach didn't even draw a wage.

Sorry if i am be-littling the professionalism of a team who aren't a team - but it's the damn truth.

Let's see, make $5 million a year playing football, or make $45,000 a year playing soccer, you do the math.

will you loan me a calculator?

Soccer sucks! The kids that play it have a shitty work ethic and would rather smoke dope. Oh and by the way none of the little pussies will lift weights. As a football coach I hate soccer players!

yeah fine with me but they drew with croatia not the czech republic,,,it just pissed me off when it sounded like u were belittling australia when we have clearly done really well ,,i think i have every right to belittle the septic tanks (yanks ) as they did shite!!!!!!! i usually go for england so i have 2 teams to go for but the australian games have been better ,,go the socceroos ,,should be the footballroos

No man, no team can be belittled when they make it to the World Cup, I was just giving you a little trash too. I mean, you laid it pretty hard on everyone else out there, not just the soccer team, so I just wanted to give it right back......

The reality is that the US is not a soccer country, Pepper is a prime example of it. He doesn't like it, that's it. It's boring to most of us (not me). Look at the changes he would make. Make the field smaller and 5 against 5. Purists like me would say "WHAT????", but most Americans think this way.. We "Yanks" need sports that are edge of your seat, nail biting and violent, we call it American Football, you call yours Australian Rules Football (at least that's what ESPN used to call it).

Regarding soccer, the play here is primitive and defensive. The only way that they can get out of the rut they are in is buy hiring a dutch, brazilian, german or english coach. Arenas is an embarrassment and Landon Donovan does not belong out there. They need to get newer faces and they need to get out of the MLS and play in Europe, South America, heck, even Australia :D

I think there should have been someone else other than McBride attacking. Donovan I haven't liked since I was watching the Miami Fusion play Chicago for the final a few years ago. All he was good at was diving in the area and drawing fouls. That he doesn't want to play in Europe anymore? Are we sure they actually want him there.

Regarding Australia, you are absolutely right, they tied Croatia. However, grant me this, the outcome of their going into the second round was a bit in doubt. Tell me you weren't sweating a little bit when Croatia was ahead. C'mon now, don't lie now....;)

Ayway, now comes the fun, LOSE AND GO HOME from now on. I think we'll see better futbol (Soccer) there. Don't you think?

I played football, coached football, played soccer, coached soccer.
I love them both. However, you can be a fatass like me and be a superstar football player (Large percentage of Linemen). Poor work ethic? Impossible. When you have poor work ethic, you can't possibly play soccer. You would not be able to play 10 minutes.
You are entitled to your opinion and to hate soccer if you want, but don't talk out of your ass and say soccer players have "shitty work ethic" as if it were a fact. It just sounds silly.

Also, soccer players are dopers? Have you not heard about football players and dope? Ricky Williams? The Minnessota Running Back with the WIzzinator (His name escapes me)?Are you joking? There are no bigger dopers than football players, and I don't blame them. Their bodies go thru collisions that would destroy normal people. They live in pain and a large percentage die young. They can smoke all the dope they want....

Peace...

I disagree here Dale, maybe here and Asia, do soccer players make $45K a year, but in Europe and South America, they make millions, on top of millions. These guys can make $10- $20 mill a year. Of course, they have to be really good....THey do not know what a salary cap is and the stadiums are always full of 100's of 1000's of people, every game, no matter when or where....

That's all I have for now....

It should be good now there's only the top 16 left. Only trouble is that it is all played in the middle of the night here.

Watching soccer is like watching paint dry. It may be more challenging endurance-wise, but american football is superior in every way. Even the officials, as bad as they were in the playoffs, were not a bad as they were in the World Cup.

Can anyone name a popular Soccer player? And I do mean a current one, not Pele or Maradona or even that girl who took her shirt off.

There was a skit on David Letterman about Soccer and he wasa trying to name them but he couldn't figure out who these players were. Shheesh Your head is covered in football and your still well known.

Maybe I would like or accept Soccer more if people would stop shoving it down my throat.

Sure, I'll help ya....

Figo, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka, Ballak, Robinho, Figueiredo, Zidane, Henry, Marquez, Borgetti, Messi, Tevez, Adu, Donovan, Pimpong (Just learned this yesterday), etc..... :D

I don't believe that a sport should be shoved down anyone's throat. In fact, hell, it's kinda' like religion or politics. I don't want anyone shoving that up my throat.
I say enjoy your volleyball and I'll watch the World Cup....(I like volleyball too, but I like playing it more than watching it....)

That's the one! Funny as heck.

Soccer sucks! All of my references are from personal experience. When I say soccer players have shitty work ethic I mean in the town I live, when I say they are dope smokers, I mean in the town where I coach, when I say they don't lift, well once again I am making reference to the long haired dope smoking lazy pieces of shit in my neck of the woods. Soccer is a recreational sport that is well suited for little children. They all have fun because they can each take turns kicking the ball and in the end if the score is zero to zero everyone is happy and they live happily ever after! Just like the "no child left behind act"

Fair enough. I am not going to be the asshole trying to push soccer to the masses, hell I don't make any money out of it. You've got your opinion, I got mine...no winners here...:thumb:

Sorry my friend, we have no access to "old state of origin rugby league matches" By the way, I played rugby while in college. We would play one weekend rugby, another weekend tackle football. Maybe that's why I am so amazingly fucked up today:laugh:
Well, good luck today, Italy hasn't shown me much so we'll have to see....

I got a new HDTV this weekend and in my effort to watch ANYTHING in HD, I watched Mexico and Argentina.

Soccer is not as boring as I said, but it is boring. Scoring is just way too low. If most NFL games were 7-7 at the end of regulation, the NFL would not be as popular.

Also, letting the defender determine what is offsides is NUTS. There needs to be a rule like hockey has that does not rely on the position of the defense for this call. Maybe one of you soccer nuts can explain why they let the defense determine where the offense can set up.

Pepper said:
Was the PK a good call?

Nop, ref bungled the call. Right outside of the goal area, there was a foul not called, otherwise, give the Oscar to the Italian guy.
By the way, I really didin't care who won, so don't ya'll be accusing me of going against one or the other...
This is only my opinion, but the game should have gone into PK's
