couldnt the japs legally kill them for having stink grenades and acids launched at them? Getting hit with a glass bottle of acid, couldnt that kill you? why do the japs even tolerate this abuse.

You are aware whaling is illegal right? The reason it is tolerated is because votes at the UN are given to countries like the US to support their cause by Japan IF the US and others look the other way. That is why there is no military or police intervention; even after the fact in most cases. It's as bad as fishing for shark fins, it makes no sense.
