OK..opinion please.
When I was around 16 (I know eons ago) I played Rugby (inside center if that means anything to anyone). During a club match I was slammed down and my knee was sat on so hard that it bent sideways.
The incompetence of the Doctor at the time suggested it was just a "ham string injury" with "cartilage complications". This was totally wrong as within 24 hours the leg had set at a 90 degree angle, normal bend.
Trip to the hospital and they then decide I had busted most of the ligaments in that leg. There followed about 8 weeks of plaster treatment involving periodic cuts from the back and front of the plaster and the guy in the plaster room leaning on the leg whilst it was reset. (Can still feel it now).
At the end of this and after a few months of physio the leg was mobile again. However any lateral movement caused the leg to collapse. Further exercise a to build the muscles further stabilised the leg.
The next stage proposed was massive surgery to re-locate the muscles around the knee to hold the join in position. I did not go through with it as it would have taken up to 6 months to get it all sorted.
Since then I have been careful in the forms of sport / exercise that I do so that I keep sideways pressure on the leg to a minimum. Never the less on occasions the leg still pops out of alignment.
I have been considering going back into treatment as I understand that they can actually re-place ligaments now.
Only problem is the time it takes to have it done (off work etc) and will the benefits be worth it? I know that there are going to be potential problems with arthritis later will I get the benefit from the surgery.
Anybody got any thoughts?
