What's the best instant messaging out there?

I like Skype. I can instant message and make phone calls from my computer. I use AIM for text messages to friend's phones

What I really want it is for IM other computers in my home network.
AIM sounds good.
AIM sounds good.
AIM would work fine, the main benefit being that it's not limited to your local network.

They have this new system out that is tethered with twine and soup cans at the end. You have to pull really really tight so make sure there are no obstacles in the network. You might have to setup an VPN.
Hopefully AIM doesn't have a problem with spam and viruses.
I would prefer wireless....smoke signals are pretty good but can you lose the signals with high winds.
Try running your own XMPP server. Wikipedia it for more info - Openfire is an XMPP server licensed under the GPL.
I hear that megaphones and loudspeakers are effective too.
