if you slam on your brakes for no legit reason and cause that person behind you to wreck you will be liable.

"Officer, there was a dog in the road!"

Seriously though, I am sure that its one in a million or more that someone gets rearended and gets a ticket. If you couldn't stop, you were following too close or not paying attentions.

I added a fourth option to the poll. :)

I was more talking about regular roads, not highways.

On the highway I generally get passed once every two or three hours, since I go pretty quick, but I move over for people as long as they aren't obnoxious about it.

Generally, on the highway, I will give people some time. I will come up behind them and not get too close, but close enough so that they notice me, maybe three or four car lengths. If they have one or two good chances to move over, and they don't, thats when I start getting closer.

Likewise, if someone comes up behind me and gives me a chance to get over without being obnoxious about it, I will do it. If they just fly right up on my ass immediately, then I don't.

Well I go through a whole slue of things.

I start out by downing my scotch, then chase with a beer either bud, miller, or coors.

Then I brag to my women who of course would be in the passanger seat how I make more money then her, and how I can do 15 pullups and Bench press my body weight 10 times.

Then I pull my shotgun of the rack in the back window of the manual pick-up, and shoot the mother fucker. While my Pitbull barks a laugh at the tailgater.

Then I continue on home and mow my lawn, before I head out camping and chopping firewood after a short hike. Sit by the fire and think about how I hate the mall, yet need some more power tools to add to my stash. Ah the dilemma.

Oh well at least I have a motorbike.

you are bad ass!

this happened a few years back, same situation some asshole slammed his brakes and the tailgater lost control, wrecked and I think almost died, thanks to witnesses the person that slammed their brakes was found, arrested and charged, you cannot deliberately cause an accident, and if you think you will get out of it with a lie about a dog being in the road good luck.

yeah, I have done the same thing on regular roads, I will pull over to the side and let them pass, keep playing games on the road and you will end up doing it to some crazy asshole that follows you home and shoots you.

I never underestimate how crazy people are and you just never know when you might encounter one.

I have the Police rear lights (traffic backers) installed in my car, it's a system the alternates the brake lights and the revervse lights while your driving.

That always works, although I seldom use them.

yup, I guess we are the only two in here with common sense?

that's why we have some many fricking accidents and road rage problems, if you are in the left lane and you see someone coming up behind you get the fuck over, it's pretty damn simple.

I think there is a big difference between someone wanting to pass you and someone riding your ass. I don't mind being passed. In fact, there are few things that I dislike more than someone camping out in the left lane with no regard for the rest of traffic. (True story: I was interviewing someone once who I really liked for the job. At some point, she admitted to being one of those people, who just like to be in the left lane even though she is clogging up traffic. She didn't understand why people got mad about it. She did not a call back or an offer.)

Civilized driver are treated in a civilized way. Asshats are also treated appropriately.

You know why people tailgate? They do it because it works. You have to downright scare the person in front of you into moving their sorry fucking ass out of the way. Nine times out of ten, the person in the left lane that is driving the same speed as the other lanes will not move if you pace them 2 car links behind. But, if you ride their ass aggressively, they usually get the hint.

You guys need to swallow your pride and just move your ass over. Stop trying to be the tough guy and slow down/speed up or whatever you do to piss them off and not let them go. I generally drive fast but anytime i see someone tailgating me, regardless if they are being an asshole or not, i just move over. It's not worth the risk to play games and increase your risk of getting pulled over if a cop is around the corner or getting into a car accident.

I usually try to let faster people go, but if someone is being a dick about it I fuck with them really good.

Here's a good example. I happen to know that a cop is sitting about 2 miles ahead of where I am, and this lady in an SUV behind me is being a massive bitch switching lanes, trying to cut me off, all because I chose to pull out in front of her from a stop sign - and no, I was in no way cutting her off.

So I get up next to this car in the right going about 30 and go the same speed to block her behind me. At this point she is getting really pissed. About a 1/2 mile away from the cop, I slow down enough to where the guy in the right passes me and the bitch goes to the right and yes, she cuts me off then floors it.

Can probably see where this is going, but let's just say the cop pulled her over doing about 70 in a 45.

Like I said I'll move out of the way if I'm the sole person blocking the lane...the only time I get pissed is when I'm stuck behind someone and then an asshole decides to ride my ass as if I'm responsible for the hold up...

Likewise, you cannot deliberately drive so close on someones ass that when they stop, you cannot stop and are forced to wreck.

Assuming that the cars have the same breaking capacity, and given that most people's reaction time is well under half a second, either you weren't paying attention or you were within 1/2 car length at high speed.

Most police officers I have talked to ticket the rearender 100% of the time. Thats the way it should be.

I hate that shit too. If traffic is really bad, sometimes the left lane is only going 10 over. If there are 10 cars in front of me doing 80 in a 70, and I'd prefer to be doing 90, I am not pulling right for some guy who thinks he owns the interstate.

Fuck that! I am never pulling off the road completely just so someone can pass me. I am going places too, I don't have time to be pulling off for every jackass who wants to go 25 over.

I can see doing that if you are a grandma and you like to go 5 under, but if you are going 5 over or more on a single lane road, they can fucking wait.

did you ever consider that the person wanting to pass might be in an emergency situation, i.e. needs to get to the hospital or something?

Good, he deserves to die. We don't need 7 billion people in this world. Especially those who are hazards to society.

If there is an emergency situation...call 911. They get paid to drive fast, and have more expierence and sirens. If you can't call 911 you're an idiot and deserve to die. There are phones within 5 feet everywhere now-a-days

If you are a foot or less from someone's bumper they will move out of the fast lane.....most people at that speed will not try the brake check think when they know they are about to crash at 60+mph.....on the other hand if I am being tailgated I change lanes, or if I am on a normal two lane I just keep my speed the same and let them pass if tey choose.

Thats what emergency blinkers are for.

If there is ONE thing more annoying than tailgaiter it's people driving 15 miles below the speed limit in the most gas unefficiant vehicle out.

naughty kitty

wow a car thread on IM. i agree with Robert, and Kelju. seriously.. if someone is going faster than you and you are in the way, then fucking move! its not that hard. if your in the right lane(slow lane) then i could see why it might piss you off. but the left lane is a passing lane and there are too many dipshits out there that drive the same speed as everyone else while in it.

I either hit the oil slick or road spike switch...

It doesn't happen to much very often, b/c when I'm on the highway, I'm usually going as fast as the person in front of me is (in the left lane all the time). I guess that was back home in Chicago....people in AZ can't drive for their life. It seems like every thinks going 5 over is acceptable in the left lane.

IMO it minimum 15+.

It depends on the circumstances. It's one thing if I see someone driving up on me quickly, I get over. But if they come in from another lane, or I failed to see them catch up to me, and they ride my ass, it's game on.

I will fuck with them unmercifully.

why? whats the point? if your in the passing lane and you arent passing, then get the fuck out of the way. does it really make you feel that much better to try and piss someone off?

what the fuck is wrong with people?!

Karma. I'm good everywhere else. Besides, it's fun.

Moral of the story: don't an ass by tailgating me.
