Well its unfair to really choose one, as the competition can vary from sport to sport and era to era and day to day...but if you simply pick who wins the most by percentage of matches they play you have to pick Tiger Woods...having said that I believe Wayne Gretzky is the most dominant athelte of all-time!

I guess Lennox Lewis has a Good percentage going as well, but he only fights 1-3 times a year, but that is the norm in his sport. Can I change my vote to Lennox Lewis?

I just thought of another point some of these athletes are playing singular sports while others are playing team sports. These are my thoughts: If you are playing a singular sport you only have to count on yourself to produce, while playing team sports you have to count on your teammates as well.

Eg., if golf was Barry Bonds sport he wouldnt have to count on his teammates to help him win, it would be his skill and his skill only that got him the wins

Each sport also varies in stats taken. Heres another valid point for Gretzky being the most dominant of his sport: Gretzky attained over 60 records while playing in the NHL, the second best in professional sports I believe is 30?(Michael Jordan). So Gretzky annihilated his competition in that respect!

I chose Tiger Woods and john, please leave my answer alone, I don't want a rant from you.

john992: lol, Wayne Gretzky? OMG.
How about Michael Jordan, Pele (best Brazilian soccer player ever who scored 1200 goals in his career), Muhamed Ali, Wilt Chamberlain (100 point game!)...? The list goes on. So many athletes have been much more dominant than Wayne G even though he did score quite a few goals :)

lmao, be prepared for a sea of URL's from good ol' johnny boy now. This thread is going to be officially johnified.

And by the way. You cannot base this on records alone. Not all sports have equal ammounts of records to beat. I mean...for example soccer only counts goals and games played and it is after all by far the most popular sport in the world.

if we are talking all time I would agree with john992, gretzky didn't get the name the ''great one" for nothing.
if we are talking current I would have to say Tiger.

Is the most dominant the one with the best stats?
Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics was not a big scorer, but look at all the championships that he won.

Harder to dominate NBA than MMA. We have to take the leage into consideration here. Wilt Chamberlain or Michael Jordan would be my final descision (sp?) :)

And by the way, What's up with TWoods? He is far from winning every time he competes. I mean, he is of course the best golfer out there but he gets beat up in so many competitions by unknown players all the f*cking time. :finger:

I have no idea what you are basing that on, but we`ll have to agree to dissagree.........anyway, the question was "Who is the most dominant in THEIR sport?

how about Roy Jones Jr. If we was able to put on the weight to go to heavy weight, he'd surely rule there as well.

Whenever I think of a dominant player, I think of a player that when he comes out on the court, floor or field makes everyone else assume they are going to take second place.

Jordan used to intimidate people in Bball, as Shaq does now (although that has a lot to do with his size, not his skill). Tiger obviously makes all other golfers feel inadequate. Just like someone facing Pele back in the day would have been sweating bullets on the soccer field. Every pitcher fears Barry Bonds. Every hockey player fears having to face Hasek. Every goalie feared having to face Gretzky. These are all people that just scare the crap out of others because they are a level above anybody else in their respective sport. Even Elway had the patented "magic" that would scare opposing defenses.

So, here's my two cents:
Basketball - Jordan
Hockey - Gretzky
Baseball - Randy Johnson
Football - Jerry Rice
Soccer - Pele
Golf - Nicklaus

Tiger Woods is Da Man in golf.
Lennox Lewis/Roy Jones Jr. is Da Man in boxing.
Shaq is Da Man in basketball.
Ricky Carmichael is Da Man in motocross.
